13 YEARS.

Thirteen years ago today, on August 13, 2013, I walked into this empty room.

Take a look at these pictures. There was nothing here. Bare walls, fluorescent lights, empty floors and a lease with my name on it.

That was CDC Cellular Repair.

There wasn't much to look at yet.

I had no way of knowing what was going to happen in that room over the next thirteen years. I didn't know how many thousands of phones, tablets and other devices would eventually cross the counter. I didn't know how many people I would meet. I didn't know there would be years when business would absolutely roar, or other years when the industry would change so dramatically that I would have to change along with it.

I certainly didn't know I'd still be here thirteen years later.

But here we are.

I've been thinking about what I wanted to say today, and my mind keeps returning to one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite old movies: the original 1965 The Flight of the Phoenix.

Some of you have probably seen it.

A group of men are stranded in the desert after their airplane crashes. Their situation looks hopeless. Rather than simply wait to die, they take pieces from the wreckage and attempt something that sounds almost insane: build another airplane from what remains.

Eventually comes the scene that has always gotten to me.

They try to start the engine.

It doesn't start.

They try again.

And again.

Their chances are running out. Everyone knows it.

And then...

it catches.

The engine sputters, begins to run, and then comes all the way up to power.

I still get chills watching it.

And when the Phoenix eventually takes off, there is another moment I love. They fly over the wreckage of the airplane that originally brought them there.

The wreckage is still there.

They haven't erased what happened. They haven't magically restored everything to the way it used to be.

They took what they had left, built something from it, got the engine running and flew forward.

I've always thought there was a tremendous lesson in that.

Life knocks you down sometimes.

Business certainly does.

Markets change. Technology changes. Competition changes. Things that worked wonderfully yesterday don't necessarily work tomorrow. You make mistakes. You have setbacks. Sometimes circumstances completely outside your control change the landscape underneath you.

The answer isn't pretending those things didn't happen.

And sometimes the answer isn't rebuilding exactly what you had before, either.

Sometimes you take what you've learned, use what still works, leave some wreckage behind and build the next thing.

CDC has certainly changed over thirteen years.

The cellular repair industry of 2026 is nothing like the industry I entered in 2013. I've changed too. I've learned new skills, pursued new opportunities, started another business and found myself working with technologies today that I couldn't have imagined working with when these photographs were taken.

But CDC is still here.

I'm still here.

Still repairing things. Still solving problems. Still learning. Still adapting. Still figuring out what comes next.

And there's one more little connection to The Flight of the Phoenix that makes that movie especially meaningful to me.

The Fairchild C-82 Packet on which the Phoenix story begins has Maryland roots. The C-82 was manufactured by Fairchild in Hagerstown—right up the road from here.

Maybe that's just a bit of local trivia.

But I like it.

Thirteen years ago, these pictures showed an empty room and an idea.

Today they show me something completely different.

They remind me that you don't have to know exactly what the next thirteen years are going to look like.

You just have to keep working the problem.

Keep learning.

Keep building.

And when life knocks you down, get back up and try that engine one more time.

Because every once in a while...

it catches.

And sometimes, if you keep at it long enough, you might even get to fly over the wreckage.

Automotive locksmithing isn't just about cutting keys anymore.

Here's an interesting look behind the scenes at something most vehicle owners will never see.

This is the under-dash fuse/relay assembly and MICU (Multiplex Integrated Control Unit) removed from a 2008 Honda Odyssey. At first glance, it looks like a big fuse box—and that's certainly part of its job. But there's considerably more going on here.

The MICU is part of a network of electronics responsible for controlling and communicating with numerous systems throughout the vehicle. When something goes wrong in this area, the symptoms can seemingly have nothing to do with one another: locks, remotes, lighting, climate-control functions and other electrical systems can suddenly stop operating correctly.

In this particular case, water intrusion is suspected of causing problems with the original unit. A replacement is on its way, and we'll know considerably more once it's installed and tested.

Why am I sharing this?

Because automotive locksmithing and vehicle security are becoming increasingly intertwined with automotive electronics. Keys, immobilizers, control modules, vehicle networks, programming and diagnostics increasingly overlap.

It's also one of the reasons I continue investing in equipment and, more importantly, education. The goal at Francis' Keys isn't simply to know how to push the right buttons on a programmer. It's to keep developing a better understanding of what's happening inside the vehicle when those buttons are pushed.

We'll see what happens when the replacement arrives. Stay tuned.

One other interesting part of this repair is the economics.

Replacing a module like this through conventional new-parts channels can become an expensive repair very quickly. The assembly isn't particularly easy to remove and install, a new OEM unit can cost several hundred dollars, and labor and programming can push the total considerably higher.

A carefully selected used module from a donor vehicle can potentially reduce that cost dramatically—but there are some important caveats:

1. Fix the reason the original module failed.

These Odysseys can develop water intrusion in this area. Installing another module without addressing the leak risks damaging the replacement too.

2. A used electronic module is always somewhat of a gamble.

A donor unit may have been exposed to moisture or other problems during its previous life, even if it looks fine externally.

3. Installation may involve more than simply plugging it in.

When replacement modules interact with vehicle security and immobilizer systems, key/immobilizer registration or programming may be required. That's where having the proper equipment and knowledge becomes important.

4. Where the donor vehicle lived can matter.

For this particular repair, I deliberately didn't source the replacement locally. It's coming from an automotive recycler in Rancho Cordova, California.

Why California?

The Sacramento area has a considerably drier climate than Maryland. That doesn't guarantee a perfect used module, but when I'm buying an electronic component that can be damaged by water intrusion, I'd rather stack the odds in my favor and source it from a dry-climate vehicle.

Sometimes repairing modern vehicles isn't simply about finding the right part. It's about understanding why the original failed, what the replacement requires, and how to make the smartest repair possible.

Alright, how about we start the day off with some lighthearted fun coupled with a little PSA? Maybe—just maybe—it'll help someone see things a little differently than pop culture and the media often encourage us to.

First, let's have a little fun.

One of the most important parts of running CDC Cellular Repair and now Francis' Keys is keeping up with technology and changing lifestyles. As I get older, I'll admit that takes a little more effort than it used to. It's easy for any of us to get out of touch with what's going on around us.

Thankfully, all of you have helped keep me current over the past 13 years. Honestly, I'm grateful for it. It keeps me learning, keeps me adapting, and maybe even helps me hang onto a little youthful energy.

Now, speaking of staying "with it"...

Exactly one week from today, CDC Cellular Repair officially celebrates 13 years serving the great people of Frederick.

And because I clearly understand today's trends, we're not having a birthday...

We're having Birthday Week. 😂

I've even seen "Birthday Month," but let's not get carried away.

Since we're celebrating, I thought I'd share something that's been part of CDC almost since the beginning.

When I opened the business back in 2013, I thought, "Sports teams have hype videos...why shouldn't CDC have one?"

If you've followed me for any length of time, you know I'm a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan. Love them or hate them, they know how to get people fired up before a game.

So I figured...CDC deserved its own pump-up video.

Being CDC, though, I couldn't exactly pick something ordinary.

The clip attached is from the 1965 film Flight of the Phoenix, starring Jimmy Stewart and Richard Attenborough. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it.

The story follows a group of survivors stranded after a plane crash in the Sahara Desert. Rescue isn't coming. Supplies are running out. Their only chance is an idea that sounds completely impossible:

Build a brand-new airplane from the wreckage of the old one.

Everyone thinks the engineer proposing the idea is crazy.

Until they realize it's their only hope.

The scene I've attached is when the rebuilt airplane's engine finally comes to life. Those shotgun-shell cartridges you hear are actually based on a real aviation technology called a Coffman starter, which was used on some aircraft engines.

It's a great movie scene.

But over the years, it's come to mean something more to me.

Right now, a lot of people are struggling with high prices. Groceries, housing, insurance, utilities—it adds up fast. People have every right to be frustrated.

What worries me more is when people believe they're completely powerless until someone else fixes everything.

History doesn't give me a lot of confidence in waiting for politicians, regardless of party.

The lesson I take from Flight of the Phoenix is different.

Build your own plane.

Maybe that means starting a side business.

Maybe it's learning a new skill.

Maybe it's changing careers.

Maybe it's moving somewhere that better fits your goals.

Whatever it is, don't let anyone convince you that you're stuck where you are.

You're probably capable of much more than you think.

So that's my little message for CDC's Birthday Week.

Thanks for an amazing 13 years. I appreciate every customer, every conversation, every referral, and every opportunity you've given me.

And since I'm obviously so good at keeping up with the younger generation...

Here’s my next fun “hobby” project. Fixing up my home alarm system. What you see here is the internals of a fully operational but very outdated system known as a Honeywell Vista 10P.

It’s a TOTL system with a catch…TOTL for 1995. It’s capable of working as is as a monitored system, however its obsolescence makes it crazy expensive. Its landline-based so that alone requires paying for landline service. Then you have to pay for monitoring and it’s last dance was 2023 and between monitoring and phone fees, it was around $1K. Not worth it.

The great news is that the obsolescence is so stinkin’ easy to reverse that only a fool wouldn’t do it. The 10P was succeeded by the Vista 20P in the late 90s. That system is still not only supported, it’s sold new to this day and has tons of parts and flexibility. What will it take to do it? Not much. Replace the board with a 20P board on the latest ROM, new keypads, and add a cellular/IP module. The existing sensors throughout the house? Totally compatible and even if some need replacement? Dirt cheap.

So, why do this and not get a Ring system or one of those mass market ones everyone else has? There’s absolutely no comparing a wired system to those. A Honeywell system is dead reliable, very well supported, and what the pros use. It’s a no brainer. The existing system has been excellent and updating it is the best way to go.

It’s not limited to just an alarm either. The Vista 20P is compliant with Alarm.com, Alarm.net and others and if you pay for monitoring, which is very inexpensive compared to the old system, you can integrate with their app and control it from your phone anywhere.

The 20P also integrates with Z wave automation , which is a bonus as well.

But the best part? This is a real security system. Ring? Simply Safe? Any of the others out there? They’re basically IoT devices and are easier to hack. A Vista is way harder to bypass which is why they’re still very popular even today.

So this is going to be fun. The existing system also has fire protection which is awesome as well. And updating to the 20P adds more redundancy to the system. The 10P that’s here has a weak spot. An intruder can avoid the call out by cutting the phone lines. A 20P with Cellular and IP is harder because if they cut the internet, the cellular will still call out.

It will also offer a ton of flexible options on who monitors. I can self monitor for very little cost, and even the professional monitoring can be cheaper than SimpliSafe depending on who you use.

Favorable news. It appears that our Google GMB is back although it's still "processing". This is the third time in 1.5 years we've had a problem.

What was it? I suspect they whacked it for keyword stuffing, which is no longer permitted. We had a service area with a bunch of surrounding cities. Don't do this with yours, it will attract the flies.

All jokes aside, here's some valuable content on the Maryland smoke detector law of 2018. I find that a lot of people are unaware and/or live in a home and don't even think about their smoke detectors. If you don't know their status, I recommend replacing them now.

In my case, the house had the originals from 1995, so they were seriously out of date. They'll fine you if they catch it, such as on a sale. In this home's situation, since it was a 1995 build, legally I only had to replace the three existing wired detectors. I did so and it's important to realize that replacement must be like-kind. So, if they're AC wired, they must be replaced with AC wired.

The fact that these detectors were never replaced until now brings up an important point. This home belonged to my parents. My Dad died in 2013 before the law went into effect. I am surprised he never paid attention to this one though. But Mom was there until 2023 and as an elderly lady she wouldn't have known about this. So, if you have elderly relatives, it might be worthwhile to check things out at their homes. Just a thought, not telling you what to do.

Additional notes:

-CO detectors are now mandatory if your house has gas or oil heat or an attached garage. My place has an attached garage.

-I used the First Alert SMCO100V-AC units which are photoelectric detectors with a combo of CO detection. They're top of the line detectors and are available for $64.95 for a 2 pack at Costco right now. That's a good deal but the price is good until 7/26 so now's the time to grab them.

-My place is grandfathered so the three detectors are all that's legally required. I did, however, go beyond that and installed battery-powered ones in all of the bedrooms. They are stand-alone units and while in my case that's fine, if your house is 2013 or newer, you can't use these. They have to be wired and interconnected in that application.

-What is interconnection? Interconnected smoke detectors are linked together. If one goes off, they all go off together. The AC powered ones have a wire in the connection that sends the communication signal for this to happen. My AC wired ones are interconnected.

-Can battery-powered ones be interconnected? Technically yes but there are only a handful of models that do it wireless but they can be a pain to find. First Alert has "One Link" and did have a "bridge" wired detector that could communicate with the battery powered ones, but it's hard to find these days. There are some Ring models that do it, so if you want interconnection, shop around.

-Note also the types of detectors. For smoke their are ionization and photoelectric. Ionization is the older tech and most experts will tell you to switch to photoelectric as they tend to be more accurate and less prone to going off when you burn the souffle. But there are models that have both and if you find them at a good price, consider them. But generally speaking, photoelectric is considered more current tech.

-One last note on my setup regarding the battery-powered units. Because it's not legally required, I personally am not required to have interconnection with those. But they must be sealed 10 year batteries. The days of 9 Volt batteries are over in Maryland. But here's an important thing to know. If you're one of these HGTV home renovators and you do major work that requires pulling a permit? You will have to update to 2013-Present standards. That means adding to the bedrooms and having an electrician come in and wire for them.
