Happy 133rd birthday to J.R.R. Tolkien!

J.R.R. Tolkien, born in 1892 in South Africa, was an English writer, philologist, and academic who became one of the most influential fantasy authors of the 20th century. After moving to England as a child, he excelled in his studies, particularly in languages, and later served in World War I. Tolkien’s academic career as a professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University provided the backdrop for his literary work. He published “The Hobbit” in 1937, followed by “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy between 1954 and 1955, which established his reputation as a master of fantasy literature. Tolkien’s expertise in linguistics led him to create entire languages for his fictional world of Middle-earth. A devout Roman Catholic, his faith influenced his writings, as did his close friendship with fellow author C.S. Lewis. Tolkien’s legacy continues to inspire readers and writers worldwide, with his works translated into numerous languages and adapted into award-winning films. He passed away in 1973, leaving behind a rich literary heritage that has shaped the fantasy genre for generations.
