New fossil fish in the shop! Knightia 🐠
Knightia is one of the most famous fossil fish in the world and is the official state fossil of Wyoming. It lived during the Eocene Epoch about 50 million years ago in large freshwater lakes that once covered parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.
Knightia was a small, herring-like fish, usually about 3–6 inches long, though some grew much larger. It likely fed on algae, plankton, insects, and tiny fish. In turn, it was a major food source for larger predatory fish living in those ancient lakes.
