Beautiful guitars are one thing—but the stories inside them are priceless. While working on a Hofner Verythin, I discovered a note tucked inside, dated December 14, 1961, signed by Richie Prescott.

The owner knew the guitar was purchased in Liverpool in the ’60s, but this note revealed a deeper history. Prescott was a member of Derry Wilkie and The Pressmen, a band that regularly played the Cavern Club. Several members went on to notable careers, including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame drummer Aynsley Dunbar (Journey) and a saxophonist who later joined Wings.

Prescott was known for modifying his instruments, including one nicknamed “the Bucket” before this Hofner. I completed a refret and replaced electronic components, carefully preserving the original wiring configuration and capacitors. Interestingly, the binding had been cut during a previous refret—possibly Prescott’s own work.

I’m honored the owner trusted me to play a small role in this guitar’s remarkable story.

This guitar came in with a bellied top and a cracked bridge among other things. This originally had a plastic bridge with adjusters that had been replaced but there were still voids under the bridge that needed to be addressed. In the end this Epiphone ended up getting a new bridge plate, bridge, neck reset, new frets, and all new bone work.
