Monkey and Dog serves as a place for children to find, read, and talk about their favorite books. Doing our part to encourage the next generation of readers, we have carefully chosen books from national and state reading awards lists, from teachers' and counselors' recommendations, and from a life-long voracious reader's favorites. We prescribe NOT to the pedagogic view of making learning fun, but

rather that learning IS fun, challenging, and joyful. Catering specifically to the individuality of each reader's interests, we make recommendations to help readers pursue their interests and discover new ones.

Our Forgotten Ficiton Book Club has selected Death in the Fifth Position as their July selection by Gore Vidal.

In Death in the Fifth Position, dashing P.R. man Peter Sargent is hired by a ballet company on the eve of a major upcoming performance. Handling the press seems to be no problem, but when a rising star in the company is killed during the performance—dropped from thirty feet above the stage, crashing to her death in a perfect fifth position—Sargent has a real case on his hands. As he ingratiates himself with the players behind the scenes (especially one lovely young ballerina), he finds that this seemingly graceful ballet company is performing their most dramatic acts behind the curtain. There are sharp rivalries, sordid affairs, and shady characters. Sargent, though, has no trouble staying on point and proving that the ballerina killer is no match for his keen eye and raffish charm.

Our Grandma's Secret Stash Book Club has selected The 17th Letter as their July selection. This novel "draws heavily" from the real-life story of Franz von Werra, a German prisoner of war in England who, after being transferred to Ontario, Canada along with other prisoners, escaped by jumping out of the window of a train and eventually made his way back to N**i Germany.

It's the height of World War II. Mary and Paul Strong keep house in their Greenwich Village apartment and look forward to the letters from their friend Max, a news photographer on assignment in Iceland. But when the next letter arrives it turns out to be a series of blank pages with a Canadian theater program inside. That evening they hear the news--the boat Max is on is torpedoed by a German sub, with all hands lost.

Paul knows something is terribly amiss, but can make nothing of the strange clue Max has mailed them. Mary herself is very suspicious of their new upstairs neighbors, then learns some startling information on her own. Paul decides to catch the next ship to Iceland. Mary decides to stowaway on Paul's ship, and both of them are headed for the adventure of their life.

Copies of The 17th Letter are available for purchase at the shop. If you have any questions about this or any of the book clubs we offer at the shop, please give us a call at 817-489-5747, and we will be happy to assist you.

Marvelous Ways has lived alone alongside a winding creek near the rugged Cornwall coast for nearly all her life, and has recently taken to spending her days sitting on the steps of her caravan with a telescope. She is waiting for something, but she's not sure what. She will know when she sees it and that is good enough for her.

Francis Drake, a young soldier adrift after the death of a fellow comrade, is grateful for the mission that guides his days. He has agreed to fulfil his friend’s last wish: to hand-deliver a letter to his father in Cornwall. But Francis’s journey doesn't go as planned. After a brief, sweet, and serendipitous reunion with a woman from his past, Francis washes up in Marvelous's creek, broken both in body and spirit.

Marvelous will come to his aid, and an unlikely friendship will grow between these two solitary souls. Marvelous has lived a long life, with many loves and countless stories to tell, and Francis needs a reason to keep going—even just the hope that life still has more to offer.

A beautiful, bighearted story that bursts with the magic of what it means to grab hold of connection and purpose when it is right in front of you, A Year of Marvelous Ways is a testament to friendship and another timeless classic from the acclaimed Sarah Winman. It's been almost twenty years since Holly set foot in Beauport, Massachusetts. A struggling novelist, her slumping sales have led to her eviction from her beloved New York apartment. Now, she must live in the last place she wants to be: her family's long-abandoned beach house.

She arrives on a mission from her literary agent: write a book that sells. Reinventing herself won’t be easy. But at least she acquires some helpful friends along the way. There's Gail, the property-obsessed realtor who introduces her to a handsome handyman. The local psychic, Serena, is also in her corner, though she warns of impending danger. And then there's Jade, a runaway teen whom Holly finds hiding in the beach house attic. Jade has nowhere to go, so Holly takes her in. Soon after, Jade stumbles upon a job with the influential Carmichael family, a turn of events that no one, not even psychic Serena, saw coming. The Carmichael's town influence has waned over the years, but they'll forever hold a dark connection to Holly's tragic past. Their hidden secrets might also put young Jade in danger.

Despite the friends Holly makes, not everyone is pleased that the prodigal daughter has returned to Beauport. Someone is watching Holly's every move from the shadows. The Watcher sees all and knows what Holly does not. Some secrets must stay buried. And even though the distant past is a faint echo, it's still close enough to be deadly.

The next riveting summer suspense by the author of THE BLOCK PARTY, ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY, and THE LAKE ESCAPE Jamie Day. If you would like to purchase a copy, please give us a call at 817-489-5747, and we will be happy to assist you.

An aspiring archivist determined to begin a “serious” life after an undistinguished undergraduate career takes up residence in the Italian countryside. Here, he becomes the all-purpose assistant to the Baronessa, known to her friends as Coco, a defiantly youthful and naturally flamboyant woman of ninety-two. Amid a chaotic and colorful milieu of gin-swilling princesses, incomprehensible handymen, roaming boarhunters, nuns, and other local wildlife, our young man does his best to catalog the villa’s extensive collection of art and antiques—although he notices that things seem to go missing from right under his nose.

Despite himself, he tumbles into an affair with a married man, complicating his future plans considerably. And when the Baronessa loses someone close to her, he becomes an unwitting accomplice in the acceleration of Coco’s great and final plan: to locate the love of her life and be reunited before it’s too late. Told with the signature wit, charm, and humanity that made Less an international phenomenon, Villa Coco is a dazzling, sun-soaked ode to life itself, a meditation on how seriously we ought to take ourselves, and a b***y Mediterranean ballad about becoming who we’ve always wanted to be.

Andrew Sean Greer, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less, showcases his wit, sophistication, and deep knowledge of focaccia in this tale of a young man who takes an unspecified job with a charismatic elderly Baronessa at her crumbling villa in the Tuscan hills.
