The big names make headlines while others suffer quietly and without the support of the world ironically, i dont believe it makes it any easier or harder one way or the other.
This breaks my heart for him. The truth is that so many who struggle become a light—hope for others, validation for our thoughts and feelings, and a sense of community and solidarity even in the face of unshakable stigma. Such a silly-sounding name just to say Jelly Roll, but his story is so much deeper.
This is a staunch reminder of the effects of depression, addiction, and anything tied to mental health: at the most inopportune times, in the moments we need our strength, the times we need a village, we can suddenly find ourselves slipping into terrible darkness. Alone, with no solid ground to plant our feet. Once a beacon of honesty and truth, we suddenly find ourselves back in the cage of nothingness.
We know there is more out there, more worth fighting for; but dear God, why again? Why the pain, the darkness, the hopelessness of it all?
I wish this man love and light, as he has become a beacon of strength for me and for many others.
This is the reminder and the wake-up call: fame and fortune do not fix it. Money and “things” do not dissuade the demons that come for our souls, draggJelly Rollus deeper into a pit of despair that we must claw ourselves out of. There is no rescue ladder. And God help anyone whose enemies fill that pit with just enough water and hate to s***f out their light forever.
Jason is stronger and braver because he knows he can fight through this. There is strength in reaching for help, for support, and running toward those who will surround you with the love and steadiness we all need.
Honesty is admirable, but the fight is where someone truly shines. It’s ugly and messy, but there is no greater grit than the will to live and shine our light when everything inside us says, “You are done.”
My hope for him is healing and joy, because we never know when the next battle will hit.
Jelly Roll reaches his lowest point in years while touring Australia, sharing candid details about anxiety, health issues and missing his family support system.
