Many years ago, during monarch migration season, Wyatt & I were out on a walk when a butterfly landed right on the tip of his nose. Instead of snapping at it or getting startled, he just froze... a little confused but completely gentle, letting this tiny creature rest for a moment before flying away again.

I only managed to grab a few blurry photos, but it became one of those moments I'll never forget. It reminded me that softness exists in places the world often refuses to see it.

That moment inspired this portrait of Wyatt - a nod to the gentleness bully breeds are capable of & the quiet magic that is loving a dog.

Loving a dog, especially one the world misunderstands, changes you.

It teaches patience.
Protection.
Advocacy.
Selflessness.
Unconditional love.

You learn to speak for someone who cannot speak for themselves. You reshape your routines, your priorities, even your heart around keeping them safe, happy, & understood.

And to me, that is such a deeply motherly kind of love.

Jerry is here to remind us to advocate louder. When it comes to bully breeds, the myths are often loud, but our love and education can be louder.

Did you know that 'Pit Bull' isn’t actually a single breed? It’s an umbrella term often used for several different types of dogs. This misidentification is a huge part of why the stigma persists. When we label every blocky-headed cutie with the same broad brush, we ignore the individual dog behind the ears.

Let's keep barking up the right tree and sharing the truth about these underdogs.

Where it all started.

In March 2020, I was a shell of a person. The pandemic didn’t just bring collective uncertainty; it brought a very specific, paralyzing terror for my family. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My 74-year-old dad was battling kidney disease and diabetes. My sister was immunocompromised, and my brother is non-high-functioning autistic.

Being hundreds of miles away from them, unable to protect them or be there for them, broke me. The anxiety was so heavy I was terrified to even step outside to walk Wyatt.

So, I bought an iPad. I needed an anchor, an outlet, a lifeline.

When I look back at this sketch of Wyatt today, it looks like a child’s doodle. Honestly, when I look at the first portraits I ever sold, I can’t help but giggle at how primitive they were. But that doodle was my therapy. It was the only thing that kept me grounded.

The fact that so many of you saw those early sketches, believed in me, and helped me launch my business is a truth that humbles me to my core.

As I approach the 2-year anniversary of Barktivist becoming an official business (on April 1st), it blows my mind how far I've come. Not just as an artist, but as a person. When I look at my current work, I can literally see my own healing and growth in the details.

I will never stop striving. I’ll never look at my work and say, “I am the best,” because there will always be more to learn, more techniques to master, and more ways to do better for you and the pets you love.

Thank you for believing in my work, in my dreams, in me, and in Wyatt. You didn't just help me build a business... you helped me build my way out of the darkness.
