Hello faithful customers. Our landline has been down for four days and so far no one has come to fix it. We apologize for the inconvenience (it rings and rings as though we aren't there). Please call or text Maureen at 510-292-9799 if you have questions or just to chat.

Greetings to all the First Friday aficionados in Fort Bragg. Tonight we have a special show for you: Denise Carpenter's FIBERCROWS. Honestly, people can't get enough of these delightfully weird creatures. In addition, local glass maven Jaimi Parsons is debuting new work. And don't forget Laura Pope's paintings that are something of a permament fixture here.
We'll provide some drinks and a charcuterie board. Come one, come all.

We echo Eco:)

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:

"It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.

"There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.

"If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That's why you should always have a nutrition choice!

"Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity."

In conjunction with the event tonight, The Bookstore has on hand jazz books from the immense library of the late, great, jazz afficionado and collector, Hans Bruhner. The sale of his books will benefit the Mendocino Coast Jazz Society's scholarship fund. These books will be on sale perpetually so even if you don't make it down tonight stop by later and check them out. Great stuff!

For First Friday, The Bookstore has the honor, along with several other locations about town, of hosting a jazz musician in the store. In our case it is pianist Dan Albrecht, who will be filling our ears/souls with the sounds of Fats Waller, among others. Despite the chance of rain throughout the evening, we hope people will venture down and check out some of the fine musicians that will be performing at various spots. This event is coordinated by Richard Karch and proceeds from jazz book sales benefits a scholarship fund set up by the Mendocino Coast Jazz Society. Hope to see some of you come on down and enjoy some fine music. Cheers!
