I was so thrilled to unbox my first shipment of bilingual English-Chinese children’s books today! These adorable titles from Lychee Press (Mina Learns Chinese - A bilingual Chinese/English kids book series) are perfect for English-speaking kids who are learning Mandarin Chinese. The author and owner of Lychee Press, Katrina Liu, is also an indie author! Be sure to check out her page! She even has free audio versions of some titles, for parents who may not be able to read/speak Chinese themselves but want to support their child’s language learning. I’ve also got two adorable titles in Chinese only that teach about the seasons and the earth’s night-day cycle.

Many of you who live right in and around Forest Lake know about the highly-rated immersion school we have here, where kids in grades K-12 can earn their standard education while also becoming proficient in either Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. Several staff members and parents of students have mentioned to me how difficult it has been for them to find good bilingual Chinese books for the kids. (As a Chinese-speaking parent myself, I’ve had the same experience.) I hope I can help solve that problem!

Now I’ll be shifting my focus to finding a few good English-Spanish picture books 😊

Today I want to spotlight a fabulous indie nonfiction author, William Charles. His first book, The Poverty Line, tells the emotional tale of the struggles he faced while growing up in Haiti. And his latest title is an exploration of how to allow life’s “dead ends” help us reach our greatest potentials.

I know this will be a daily sight for me once Minnesota’s long winter nights return, but it was still cool to see our sign lit up at night for the first time, when we stopped by a few evenings ago! 🌕 (Of course, those of you who live nearby have probably seen it many times when driving along 97 or visiting the gas station in the evenings!)

🎉Yet another exciting announcement!🎉

Introducing Nayru the Sea Dragon! (Neigh-roo, aka The Sea Squish).

After lots of planning and contemplating, we decided to bring our guppie tank home and swap it for our larger aquarium, so that our axolotl Nayru could come to live at the bookshop! Be sure to say hello to her on your next visit! (But please don’t knock on the glass!)

Nayru was getting bored at home by herself, with us away at the bookshop and other jobs each day. She had no people to watch! Looking forward to letting her meet all of you each day!

First of all, thank you to all the wonderful folks who came to yesterday’s free book exchange! It was a huge success and many good reads were swapped on the tables! I’m strongly considering holding a book exchange every-other month, if you guys are interested!

Second of all, I want to spotlight two indie authors on my shelves. While neither of these authors are local to Minnesota, I was so excited to get their titles in my shop. They are both from Australia 🇦🇺

Alanna Russell writes epic fantasy and creates all her artwork herself, (like myself!) I’m always immediately drawn to fellow author/artists, and Alanna’s work is absolutely gorgeous. Her debut novel The Eyes, the Sword and the Remedy tells the tale of three magically-gifted half brothers, and has already collected an impressive pile of great reviews online. I can’t wait to get to it on my To-Be-Read list!

J.S. Harman is an award-winning indie sci-author who recently published the third title in his Dark Worlds series (book 3 will be coming to my bookshop soon!). His first book, Dark Sands, follows a team of deep-space explorers throughout their harrowing experience on a strange new planet. His work has a focus on adventure, existentialism, survival and mystery. And yes, this series is also on my reading list!

Amazing authors and fabulously-written stories are everywhere—not just in the big publishing houses ❤️
