Toward a Better Day

On this bitter cold day
as the bare branches sway,
wishful thoughts turn to May
and those green dreams of Spring.

In the chill that bites deep,
I hoard blankets to heap
bringing welcomed, warm sleep
where some sweet robins sing.

Yet there's hope midst the cold
as reflections unfold
of all days now grown old
when a voice whispers, "Spring!"

Disassembling those memories
No, not the thoughts, but the things
A grandchild's table and chairs
A beautiful set with butterfly wings

Unscrewed and plastic wrapped
Stored for future glee
Picture the fun that will come
Of a generation yet to be

A child I may never meet
On a day I shall not see
May feel the joy of playing there
And perhaps be told of me

Sittin' on my t**h
It's gonna take a push
To get me off the sofa cush

On this chilly autumn day
Sendin' out a "Hey"
And just wantin' to say
"Make this your very best day"
That's all I've got to say

I ought to mow the leaves
Before there comes a breeze
More allergens to sneeze
Sniffle, blow and wheeze
Til we hit the freeze

Okay, that's all I've got
Like it or not
It's time to trot

Bear with me as I am feeling philosophical today. My poet friends will understand more than most others. I have not written much of anything during the past year or so; but, having admitted this fact, I still have the spark within that compelled me to pen my thoughts for years. Life has taken away a great deal of my creative drive, or maybe just forced it to an alternate path more necessary for the time being. I have always been a fan of metaphors. Here goes my thoughts for today...
Each step taken forward matters. It matters not just to the person taking that solitary step but, also, to those near and far compelled to do the same with their own feet. I choose my own step on a new path rather than tracing a footprint already placed in the sands of time. It's not that I cannot, or do not, admire another's courage, but more that I need to find my own courage. Today I'm taking one step forward and tomorrow must remind myself that the journey goes on. A new path has been waiting for that first step.

All 5 of my books are now out-of-print, but I do still have copies to sell if anyone is interested. There are also some used copies to be found.

On a November Day

Snowflakes waltz upon a breeze,
Seemingly with graceful ease,
Never asking if I care
That they're catching in my hair.

Shivers tango down my back
Should my outer garment lack.
River's edge sports crusty ice;
Winter's coming, that's the price.

Pasodoble grabs the leaves.
Quickstep answers, "My turn, please."
Dance of seasons press each day
Into future's "come what may."

Life
I've come to a conclusion.
Life is not a blast
But rather a reflective look
At all that's been my past---
The sweet, the sad,
Thoughts gone awry,
The "should have beens,"
Unanswered "whys."
The older that I grow
The more I realize
There really is a lot of truth
In saying that time flies.
Those days I walked
And should have fled,
In silence stood
While my heart bled
Childhood seems quite long ago
Yet only yesterday
And memories, a precious gift,
That I can't toss away.
Absorbed the joys
Or swallowed pain,
Watched sunshine pass
Or clouds bring rain
Perhaps the best
I now can say
Is that I've learned
To take each day
For what it brings
And realize
That wisdom forms
Through opened eyes.
