How I spent my weekend, South Carolina edition! Spent a few days working with the Palmetto Woodturners this weekend. Hands on class, with 10 students, making “antique metal bowls” out of wood. Everyone did great and we covered a lot of technical aspects of finishing cuts, sharpening, body movement and using some cool paint. On Saturday I did a 3 hour demo on turning a couple Halloween decorations. Tip of the hat to for encouraging me to pursue this style of project. Great trip, I’m now home and really tired, so off to bed after I post!

Will be headed to South Carolina this coming weekend for an all day hands on class Friday and a half day demo on Saturday. The class will be focused on bowls but the demo will be Halloween themed! I love Halloween decorations and it’s challenging to have lathe projects beyond basic pumpkins. I’ll be showing a technique I learned from combining scroll saw work with turning and then a simple spindle project to make a ghostie that just makes me smile. Should be a fun weekend for sure. Me and my buddy Mel are finishing the drive home from SWAT today. Had a great time,even though Texas in August makes it hard to breathe. Lol. This year I was also a regional demonstrator and had 2 rotations on making nuts and bolts with hand chased threads. Spent time with great friends, made new ones and had some of the best ribs ever!! My mind won’t turn off and I’m super jazzed to get back into the shop. We all need a recharge once in a while and this was some perfect timing for me!!

Quick project in prep for my next beginner woodturning class that starts tonight at Craft Alliance!! Been out of the classroom for several weeks and excited to get back in. This is a garden dibble (or dibbler), and it’s used to create measured depth holes in soil for seeds, bulbs and small plants. Remember, it’s after April 15 so you can plant your seeds. In the Midwest don’t put plants in the ground until after Mother’s Day. Check with your local Extension Office if you have questions specific to where you live regarding planting times.

Working between both lathes today. Finishing some personal gift turnings as well as starting to resupply my website and show booth inventory with bottle stoppers. Whenever one side is drying I go work the other side. Really like that I’m finally not in panic production mode and can kind of do what I want. It’s nice not being totally stressed out of my mind.
