I just tried 2 new products; the Clover Metal Hera with Stylus and Water Erasable Tracing Paper. The tracing paper allowed me to draw the embroidery lines with no flipping or having to use a light pad. I made a goof and it disappeared easily touching it with a damp cloth. The con: it may not show up on some darker fabrics. MML has these in stock!

This is the reason I recommend to customers to use a color catcher sheet(s) when they wash a quilt. This quilt had a pieced backing with some red fabric. Look how much color was trapped in two color sheets! Thankfully the white fabrics are not pink now.
