New cello day is always exciting! These sit in our virtuoso line and are made after the Montagnana pattern. That means they feature wider bouts which results in a bigger and more powerful sound. After spending some time with them this afternoon, I can tell you they play exceptionally well. We currently have a great selection of other cellos in the 7-12k range as well. Come try one out today!

The Jay Haide l’ancienne model viola is based on the historical Brescian maker, Maggini.  The unique sound holes and double purfling, along with the distinctive carving of the scroll pay homage to this maker. This is a 15 ½” model, which is comfortable and playable to musicians who might struggle with a larger instrument.  Although its body length is smaller, the full arching produces a warm and resonant tone. Beautiful to look at, it is even more wonderful to play!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

A few people have asked me, so I wanted to give a quick update on the cello building project. It's going well! Many of my friends know that I hit the pause button on the cello for a while and tackled building an electric bass. I have a 75th anniversary Fender precision bass that I tune like a cello and I thought it could be fun to make a bass from scratch that was inspired by that Fender. Now that I'm done with that, I'm returning to the cello where I left off. I had the c-bout ribs bent and glued. I glued some cork to my clamping cauls and "final final" bent the ribs against the blocks and clamped them tight. This "finishes" the fit of the rib to the block. Now I'm carving the outside of the blocks (photo) in preparation for bending and gluing the upper and lower bout ribs. Next I'll fit and glue the linings, then the rib structure will be essentially complete! That will be an exciting moment for me, because then I'll be able to trace the rib structure outline on the joined top and back plates. I'll cut those shapes out and things will really start looking looking a cello!

Taking a break from going around the shop, I’d like to talk about some cellists who I would consider my “cello heroes.”

Steven Isserlis - his playing has captivated me since I first started playing cello. His use of gut strings on his Stradivarius gives a unique sound no one can match! His recording of Schumman’s works for cello are especially beautiful. I’ve taken some nuggets of wisdom from his approach to playing: let the music guide you as you play, don’t try and force any of your own ideas!

Gautier Capucon - I had the pleasure of seeing Mr. Capucon perform the Saint-Saens concert with the Chicago Symphony a few years ago. He plays with a deep, rich sound that projected all the way to me in the back of the hall! His recording of the Dvorak cello concerto is one of my favorites, as well as his recording of Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante.

Pablo Ferrandez - He has a unique style with a very physical and intense playing technique. He has a series of videos on YouTube about cello technique that I have found very helpful in my college practicing. He also posted a video where he compared 3 different Stradivarius cellos. That would be a dream-come-true for any cellist!

Truls Mork - He has a mastery of the instrument unlike any other cellist alive today. He can play the most technical passes with ease which allows to play pieces like the Dvorak concerto with a full expression. His Montagnana cello has a unique, reedy sound that I love.

Cello heroes!

This week we take a break from describing the differences between various items in the shop and focus instead on musicians who inspire us. Here are a few of my cello heroes from when I was a young cellist:

Yo-Yo Ma – my formative years studying the cello were in the 1990’s, and those were some of Yo-Yo’s most prolific recording years. I saw him perform live several times in those years as well, along with being in the audience for masterclasses he taught. His tone on his Montagnana cello is still my personal benchmark for romantic playing.

Mstislav Rostropovich – while he was winding down his performing career in the late 1990’s, his legacy of recordings and his championing of modern music were hugely influential. A highlight of my musical life was hearing him perform the first Shostakovich cello concerto live with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Janos Starker – while one of the finest cellists of any age, his greatest contribution is likely his education and training of generations of cellists. Watching him teach masterclasses was a thrilling experience, even if the cello student playing was often terrified!

Anner Bylsma – baroque performance practice felt like even more of a niche when I was a young cellist than it does now, but hearing Anner perform Haydn with Tafelmusik forever impacted the way I think about performing music from different eras.

Truls Mork – his technical mastery of the instrument being in total service to the music set standards in my mind of how the giants of the repertoire should be played – Dvorak, Elgar, etc.
