Friday Artist Feature!

This week I wanted to showcase the risograph prints and greeting cards we brought in this year from Minneapolis based artist, Katie Blanchard.

Her art immediately spoke to me when I came across it as so much of it was familiar flora of Door County. The bright colors also were a draw to my maximalist heart and they really brighten and warm up a space.

Katie uses watercolor, pencil, ink, and digital illustration to design much of her work - and then creates many of her prints via risograph printing. Risograph machines use rich vegetable-based inks in vibrant - and even fluorescent - colors to create lush textural + affordable prints.

All of us wingnuts over at Cana Cove know how important it is to move your bodies but we also think it’s very important to keep your mind engaged through the dog days of summer. We’re loving the 90’s revival weaving itself through young people’s circles right now and with one of our favorites, the Hacky Sack returning to the scene we decided it was a good time to have a little contest.

Without further ado I give you the June Summer Reading Challenge! Every 20 minutes you log reading through the rest of June counts as 1 entry into our contest to win a Hacky Sack made here in Door County! You do not have to live in Door County to enter but you will have to be in Door County sometime in July or beyond to pick up your prize if you win, or cover the shipping cost.

You can submit your minutes in the comments section of this pinned post anytime throughout June. If you prefer to do it weekly or one lump submission at the end of the month. Whatever your preference is works for us. You can also email your name and time log to [email protected] or stop in and submit your time log in person at the shop. You can set your own goal, ours is 4 hours for June which is less than 10 minutes a day.

The more you read the more entries you will have in the drawing so more chances to win. We will draw 5 winners on the 1st of July so all entries must be in by 6 PM central time June 30th.

Hacky sacking, like reading, is something that can be enjoyed by the whole family so we invite all ages to participate. I speak from experience as our four year old just learned how to play catch with ours. Everything counts as far as logging time. Audiobooks, novels, picture books, comics or the newspaper. Read what you love!

Since we opened the surf shop in 2020, it’s always been important to us to support local and regional artists. To kick off our Friday Featured Artist segment this season I give you just a sampling of the work of Fish Creek resident Rachel Sowinski.

She was born and raised in here in Door County. Moved to Green Bay to attend UWGB where she began working at The Gift Itself on Broadway. She later purchased the business in 2012 representing artists from across the US with an in house focus on jewelry production, custom jewelry and repairs.

She moved back to Fish Creek in 2022 to be closer to family and start one of her own. She now does independent metalsmithing work from her home studio and customs along with creating of one of a kind stained glass window adornments exclusively for our shop.

Our in house artist/sewist has a screen print project she’s working on for the month of June to benefit an important local organization, HELP of Door County. Her Lady Liberty/Rosie the Riveter mash up design was part of an event last month at Peninsula Art School. If you missed the event you have another opportunity to get your hands on a new shirt or upcycle an item of clothing you already own by dropping it off to be printed by her. There’s a small fee of $10/item for upcycle printing that goes directly to HELP. All proceeds of new shirts available for preorder benefit HELP as well.

We’ll share the infographics in our stories or you can give her a follow directly if it’s something you’d be interested in.
