Wayuu bags are handmade by the indigenous women of the Wayuu tribe, located in La Guajira Peninsula of South America (northeastern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela) in the Caribbean Sea.
In the Wayuu culture, weaving and knitting are a time honored tribal custom. Bright colors, elaborate techniques and traditional ancestral patterns are inspired by their spiritual beliefs and by nature. It's an art to express life as a native Wayuu and it's a symbol of creativity, intelligence and wisdom.
Each one of a kind Mochila (spanish for bag) is entirely hand woven by one woman only with 100% high quality resistant cotton thread. Designing extraordinary patterns with geometric shapes and vivid colors, representing symbols of Wayuu mythology, every artisan develops her own style and each unique Mochila is a signature of their creation.
Two traditional crochet techniques (single thread and double thread) are most commonly used to create these eco-friendly shoulder bags, that are seldom repetitive, vary in size and take up to 160 hours or 30 days to complete.
The Wayuu Mochilas are the perfect combination of exotic, practical and boho chic! These extraordinary bags have become quite a trend and are gaining notoriety in the US and Europe! Featured in Vogue, Elle and other fashion magazines, from movie stars to socialites, everybody is admiring their versatility, uniqueness and craftsmanship!
