Fear isn’t so difficult to understand. After all, weren’t we all frightened as children? Nothing has changed since Little Red Riding Hood faced the big bad wolf. What frightens us today is exactly the same sort of thing that frightened us yesterday.

On this day in 1899, Alfred Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone, England.

He would go on to become one of cinema’s most influential directors, earning the title “Master of Suspense.”

With films such as Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds, and North by Northwest, Hitchcock transformed fear into an art form. He understood that sometimes the most terrifying moment is not what we see, but what we are waiting to see.

His shadows, strange obsessions, psychological tension, and unforgettable imagery continue to influence horror and thriller filmmakers today.

William Golding was born on this day in 1911. He was an English novelist, poet, and playwright. His first book, Poems, was published in 1935. After the war, Golding resumed teaching and started to write novels. His first and greatest success came with Lord of the Flies in 1954, which is considered a classic and is often required reading in many high schools.
Fun Fact: William Goldman was a legendary screenwriter who won two Academy Awards, one for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and another for All the President's Men.
