...And a few facts about the other signer of our beautiful piano... BILLY JOEL!

He was a pretty good boxer.
After bullies knocked the books out of his arms when Joel was walking to his piano lessons, he took up boxing as a teenager and even won a few amateur fights in the Golden Gloves competition.
In one of his last bouts, he got his nose broken.

Joel's song ‘Vienna’ is about a trip to see his father.
He barely knew his German father, Helmuth, later known as Howard, a classical pianist who fled Germany during the Holocaust and made his way to The Bronx, where Billy was born.
When Joel was in his 20s and in Europe, he hadn’t seen the old man in over a decade but heard his father was in Vienna, where the two had a visit.

He left Woodstock because of foul toilets.
Joel spent a day and a half at the 1969 music festival in upstate New York because he wanted to see Jimi Hendrix, but the bathrooms were so disgusting that he left.

He was born to non-observant Jews, but attended Mass as a boy.
Growing up in Hicksville, Long Island, Billy had a lot of Italian-American and Polish-American Catholic friends, so he went to church with them on Sundays. He even went to confession. Now he is atheist.

He graduated high school at age 43.
He left Hicksville High without having completed his work, but in 1992 he turned in some missing essays and got his diploma.

He thinks he’s funny-looking.
“I don’t look like a rock-and-roll star,” he said . “I look like the guy who delivers the pizza.”

He has outsold Michael Jackson.
As of 2014, Joel’s US album sales stand at 81.5 million units, 6 million ahead of MJ. That puts him sixth all-time, behind only the Beatles, Elvis, Garth Brooks, Led Zeppelin and the Eagles.

Test Your Knowledge of the Famed Pianist--

Elton John Began Playing Piano at Age 7

Elton got an early start on his trademark instrument. He began teaching himself to play his grandmother’s piano at age 7, and displayed a knack for playing many songs by ear. His ability eventually won him a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at age 11.

He Began as a Pub Musician

Elton John’s career as a professional musician started out the same way as pretty much everyone else’s – by playing for whoever would listen. As a teenager and with the help of his parents, he secured a regular gig as a pub musician at the Northwood Hills Hotel.

He Formed a Band When He Was 15

It seems like throughout the short time in his life when he wasn’t an international superstar, Elton was eager to hurry up and get there. He formed a band with his friends called Bluesology at age 15, just a few short years before he met Bernie Taupin.

“Elton” and “John” Were His Bandmates

In addition to helping perfect his skills as a live performer, Elton’s time with Bluesology provided another source of inspiration. In 1967, shortly after recording his first-ever collaboration with Bernie Taupin, the 20-year-old Reggie Dwight adopted the name Elton John.

“Elton John” is a combination of the names of two of his
Bluesology bandmates, saxophonist Elton Dean and vocalist Long John Baldry. He legally changed his name to Elton Hercules John in 1972, when he was 25. For reference, the hero of Greek and Roman mythology was not a member of Bluesology.

He was a solo act going by simply “Reggie,” and would play weekend gigs, Thursdays through Sundays. During this time, he played the same kinds of sets that bar musicians play to this day – a collection of current popular hits along with a few originals carefully thrown in.
