Dozens of people gathered in Newport, Rhode Island on Juneteenth for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the grand opening of the Edward W. Kane and Martha J. Wallace Center for Black History. The new center is located inside the historic Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House.

' As The Nation Celebrates Juneteenth, Rhode Island Is Rich With Black History '

Friday is Juneteenth, a national holiday marking the day when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that slaves were officially free. The announcement happened in 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. "We have the richest black history in America, and no one knows,” said Ray Rickman, Executive Director of Stages of Freedom.
