By the beginning of June, the wildflowers started to appear in Colorado, but it was still early for those growing at higher altitudes. In Summit County, Silverthorne, by late June, the surrounding hillsides were covered with Arrowleaf Balsamroot. In all of our visits in the past years, we’ve never seen them so prolific. We hiked up a small trail and were amazed at the variety of wildflowers growing so close to the city. Besides the yellow Balsamroot, there were Irises, Phlox, Green Gentian, and Larkspur to name a few. In Fairplay, we hiked at Pennsylvania Mountain. The Snow Buttercups were just beginning to grow through the snow. Other than patches of Candytuft, and Snowball Saxifrage, little was blooming, but just seeing the panorama view of the surrounding mountains is always exhilarating. In Southern Colorado, Dandelions and buttercups filled meadows surrounded by the mountains. If in Colorado, get out and enjoy in the early morning the emerging wildflowers. To help identify what you are seeing, our pocket-sized paperback 4” x 6” Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide has over 285 wildflowers photographed, identified, and described by habitat, life zone, and flowering time. This award-winning book is available on Amazon, or order your signed copy shipped free, at www.HighCountryArtworks.com.

Spring is arriving in Colorado and one is likely to see many colorful yellow flowers along the trails, in meadows, along streams or in wooded areas and they usually form patches of color. Golden Banner is a member of the Pea Family and produces showy yellow flowers that form loose clusters atop stems. It is common in mountain meadows and along roadsides. Wallflowers can also grow in showy clusters in forest openings, along ridges and in mountain meadows. Wallflowers have 4 petals that is characteristic of a species in the Mustard Family. Probably the most prevalent flower in spring is the common dandelion, Taraxacum officinale. This flower is actually a non-native invasive plant but there are also native dandelions and dandelion look-alikes such as the False Dandelion, Agoseris glauca, that appears in dry meadows and grassy hillsides. Both the common Dandelion and the False or Mountain Dandelion are part of the Sunflower Family and both have the round seed pod that tempts one to blow it and to scatter seed plumes in the wind. Want to learn more about identifying wildflowers? All of the wildflowers mentioned above are among the over 285 wildflowers featured in the handy pocket-sized book, Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide by Linda Nagy. Included in the book are common, scientific and family names plus descriptions, flowering times, habitat, life zones and large, clear photographic images. The book is available on Amazon and on our website. Use code SPRING2021 at www.highcountryartworks.com for an additional 10% off plus free shipping.

Pasqueflowers are blooming as well as other early wildflowers in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. When the first Pasqueflowers begin to bloom, many suggest that it signals that Spring has arrived in the Rockies. The Pasqueflower is also called Easter Flower, or Wild Crocus and is one of the very first wildflowers to bloom in the High Country. The scientific name for Pasqueflower is Pulsatilla patens Ssp. multifida. Pulsatilla is from the Latin, “pulsing”, that probably refers to the blood of sacrificial lambs of Passover. Pasque alludes to Easter or Hebrew “pesach” for Passover. Pasqueflowers are found in open forests, meadows, clearings, and sometimes in snowmelt. Two more early blooming wildflowers from the Buttercup Family are the ivory-white Marsh Marigold and the yellow Snow Buttercup. They appear in marshes, wet meadows, and along high altitude streams often as snow is melting or even in low running icy mountain streams. The Marsh Marigold has thick, glossy, heart-shaped leaves whereas the Snow Buttercup has leaves deeply cut into narrow lobes. Both have yellow central disks with many stamens. The yellow Glacier or Avalanche Lilly also blooms through melting snow and can be found wide spread in open wet alpine meadows. Its nodding flowerheads consist of 6 tepals (petals or sepals) curving backwards and 6 noticeable stamens facing downward. Violets, Spring Beauties, Holly Grape, and Phlox are additional early bloomers. Go out and look for these early blooms but don’t wait too long. By late Spring or early Summer, these colorful wildflowers may have only leaves remaining. All of the High Country wildflowers mentioned are among the over 285 wildflowers featured in the handy pocket-sized book, Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide by Linda Nagy. Included in the book are common, scientific and family names plus descriptions, flowering times, habitat, life zones and large, clear photographic images. Colorado’s wildflowers are blooming in the Crested Butte area.
By Bernie Nagy, photographer, and author
One of the best places to see Rocky Mountain wildflowers is in Crested Butte, known as the wildflower capital of Colorado. Since 1986, the town has hosted a wildflower festival. The festival this July 10 to 19, 2020 offers hundreds of events from hikes and walks, art workshops, photography classes, and more. Even if you don’t attend scheduled events, you can travel the back roads on your own to enjoy fantastic wildflower displays.
One route to see many wildflowers is to travel County Road 317 from Crested Butte to Gothic. The road to Keebler Pass and along Washington Gulch Road are also great areas. Some Crested Butte stand-out wildflowers are Lupines, Mule’s Ears, Aspen Sunflowers, Green Gentian, Corn Lilies, Paintbrushes, Mariposa Lily and Columbine.
Linda Nagy and I have attended the Wildflower Festival for many years, and our new third edition 4” x 6” book, Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide, is available at the Townie Bookstore in Crested Butte and the Wildflower Festival Headquarters.
The 285-plus wildflowers in the guide are grouped with color-coded page edges to help in quickly locating an unknown wildflower. Besides descriptions of the flowers, the guide also features the Colorado Rocky Mountain Life Zones, illustrations of leaf shapes and inflorescences, and an index of wildflowers by color. This compact, up-to-date guide is the perfect size for taking along on hiking trips in the Rocky Mountains. The guide's rounded corners make it easy to tuck in a pocket or pack.
Where ever you are in Colorado, get out and enjoy the wildflowers in the high country and learn more about them. For help in identifying what you see, order our book at www.highcountryartworks.com. Use code WFBook to receive a special price and your autographed copy shipped to you free. Rocky Mountain Wildflowers Field Guide is also available in print and ebook versions on Amazon.
