Visit the former Duluth Mesabi and Iron Range in northern Minnesota. Owned and operated today by the CN Railway, the historic lines of the DM&IR still play a vital role in transporting iron taconite from the mines to Great Lakes freighters bound for steel mills on the lower Great Lakes.

In Part 1 of this two-part series, we will cover the Iron Range Sub which feeds the CN dock at Two Harbors. The majority of traffic is taconite pellets from US Steel's Minntac Plant near Mountain Iron, MN. Newly rebuilt GE AC44C6M's by Wabtec are the current power for these trains, while former Southern Pacific trunnelmotors can still be found handling local traffic.

CN recently added hundreds of new ore cars to their lineup and we will see them in action carrying loads of hot taconite pellets to the impressive ore docks at Two Harbors.

In addition to hte ore trains, we will catch the North Shore Scenic Railroad in operation out of Duluth.

With a free Saturday in May, yesterday I got to play chauffeur and tour guide for my parents. First was a fun grad party in Sartell, MN, then I showed them the Fastenal store in St. Cloud which was on the way to a train display in Waite Park, MN near the site of the Great Northern Railroad’s car shops. The car shops are long gone but the display is very nicely done and the location and property are all nicely maintained. They even posed for a couple pictures! Finally a stop at the Hutchinson Dairy Queen and then home. I photographed the informational plaques too for anyone interested. We’re back at it Monday so stay tuned for more posts this week!

Not sure how an entire week went past already but as always after a show we want to thank everyone so THANK YOU to everyone from the Twin Cities Model Railroad Museum that helped with the show! Also, THANK YOU to everyone that attended the show and stopped by our booth, it was great to see everyone and visit!
We’re off for over a month with train shows. Our next show is the 34th Annual Rail Fair train showing La Crosse, WI on July 18th.
