Seasoned collectors can skip this, as it's old news for them. But if you are looking to sell a collection you've inherited, one of the first bits of information you'll want to establish is the age of your books. Comics have publishing dates inside, often of the first page, but it can be buried in tiny text, and some reprint editions such as from Gold Key, Dell, Classics and others don't always give the newly-printed date, so that a 1975 comic may still read the original date of 1956 on the inside.

So one of the quickest ways to narrow it down is by the original cover price. The sweet spot for comic collectibles is 1930s through the early 1970s. Of course there are valuable items after this era, and there are also comics from this period not worth much, but your odds of having something valuable greatly increase from these years. Comics from this period range in cover price from 10c to 25c (giant-size issue may be up to 50c). Generally, 10c was the standard price on comics 1933-1961, 12c ran from around 1962-1968, and 1969-1974 ranged from 15c to 25c. After that, comic cover prices rise quickly up to this day.

(-- Bookery is one of the largest dealers for vintage comics in the Midwest. Most comics shops are small and have limited resources to purchase major collections. At Bookery we are positioned to make strong offers on collections valued up to $1-million or more. We also purchase original pulp magazines, vintage paperbacks, and specialized collectible books.)

Just put out several hundred assorted magazines all on clearance for 99-cents each. And there may be more added through the week as I have a chance to unearth them from storage.

Tomorrow we'll be presenting nearly 1,000 vintage comics all priced at $5 each. These cover many genres and range from fairly modern back to the 1940s. There will also be a handful of behind-the-counter books that are new arrivals as well.

Fun Fact: today marks the birthday of legendary science-fiction author E.E. "Doc" Smith (1890-1965), often called the father of "space opera". He debuted in the same Aug. 1928 issue of Amazing Stories as did the 1st app. of Buck Rogers, and it is Smith's flying spaceman that's on the cover (not Buck as is often assumed). His "Skylark of Space" and "Lensman" series were cited by Robert A. Heinlein as his primary influence. They were also considered major influences on their work by George Lucas and J. Michael Straczynski.

Just put out nearly 200 Whitman variants of DC Comics. These were not reprints, but were issued in bagged sets for distribution to department stores and the like. Whitman handled the distribution, and so the DC logo was replaced with a Whitman one. Issued 1978-1980 these vary from uncommon to quite rare (in fact some are among the rarest comics period... with one issue reported to have only 5 known copies!). There are some other individual scarcities, but mostly the ones from 1980 tend to be rarer. Along with Marvel's 30c and 35c price variants, these are among the earliest sets of what we think of as cover variants.
