...continuing with this 7PRC Mod 70 build...re-cutting/truing the bolt-face, lugs, and final hand-lapping of lugs. Once everything is square and true, we'll take all our measurements for barreling and we can verify our blueprinting with a depth micrometer. We'll do our barreling next; one of the trademarks of the Mod 70 (The Rifleman's Rifle) is the "cone" breech, seen in the last picture, makes feeding a round into the chamber smooth and nearly dummy-proof....

...unique new customer project...taking the client's older Win Mod 70 in 7mm STW and updating it into a modern day long-range rig in 7PRC, suppressor-ready, in a new Boyd's Laminate Stock. The interesting part is we're going to customize it from a factory BDL bottom-metal into a DBM (Detachable Box Magazine) system using a PTG DBM that takes AICS Magazines....never done this with a Mod 70, we'll see how it turns out. After removing the factory barrel (will be replaced with a new Rock Creek Match Barrel), noticed the action face is ugly. We're going to blueprint that, along with the action threads, lug seats and then we'll blueprint the bolt and final hand-lap the bolt-lugs....

...every once in a while I'll do a Savage build for a client. This one started as a Savage .338 Win Mag with iron sights that the client already had.....got a new Rock Creek Match Barrel, chambered it in 300PRC, dropped into an MDT Chassis with the big 3.850 AICS mags for that big 300PRC cartridge, upgraded trigger, Vortex Rings with one of the new Leupold MK4's.....nice long-range set-up, shoots great, no more barrel nut, threaded for suppressor....

...another factory rig we ordered and set-up for a client...this time a Bergara B-14 Timber in .308. If you like a nice walnut stock, there's fewer and fewer to choose from; the Timber is a good one for the money. We epoxied the sling studs permanent, added a Harris Bipod. On a budget, we got him a Burris Fullfield Scope, decent glass/features, nice and light, and mounted in Talley Rings. For the muzzle, he wanted a .30Cal direct-thread suppressor in the future, so we threaded 1/2-28, got him a 5/8-24 reducer with a thread-protector. With slim hunting barrels this is a good set-up, lets you run standard 5/8-24 end-caps and the oversized thread-protector protects the flared shoulder of the reducer....good looking, functional hunting rig....

....one of the new Bergara Light-Weight CIMA rigs I set-up for a client for an Alaska trip. My advice, quality control continues to decline, even on the higher-end stuff....this client had the wisdom to have me order everything, go through everything and even test fire. The rifle's bedding was non-existent and badly needed (especially with a 300 WinMag). The factory muzzle brake was junk and wasn't even screwed tight or locktited, we replaced it and we replaced the trigger with a nice TriggerTech, professional scope mounting, epoxied the sling studs permanent....very comfortable recoil now, good scope, accurate/consistent and reliable rig...

....I get the Cerakote and Duracoat discussion here and there. Here's the answer...I've used both, I prefer Duracoat. The key to finishing is proper surface preparation, not as much the finish itself. Do the prep right and Cerakote/Duracoat are fairly interchangeable. However, Duracoat is easier to work with and less nasty/stinky; it dries quickly and can be handled soon after applying. This is nice for multiple-color coating projects. Also, you don't have to bake it, it will cure naturally, which is nice. Lastly, Duracoat is a WI company, I try to keep it local if I can. Pictures below...MDT Magazine that was Parkerized and Cerakoted at the factory, see the scrape lengthwise and the gray Parkerizing underneath. This is how a coating wears/flakes off when certain metal on metal happen, completely normal. On the right is a Parkerized Bolt with Duracoat...see how it wears in front of the firing pin cocking piece and you can see the gray Parkerizing underneath...totally normal...no coating is impervious, they will wear and flake when there's repeated contact with metal, but overall very tough stuff....

...if you like shiny things....custom coyote rig for a client in 25-06. Started with a Rem 700 factory rifle, rebarreled with a Rock Creek Fluted Match Barrel, Bell & Carlson Stock. This stock the client had was a BDL bottom-metal inlet, but he wanted it magazine fed, so we switched it over/custom milled it for an M5 DBM with MDT Magazines. Timney Trigger, Harrell Brake, Talley Rings and an older Leupold Scope...1/2MOA with factory ammo, nice rig, virtually no recoil, really enjoyable to shoot....

...continuing with this 6.5PRC Long-Range rig....next is all the finish work, which is tedious work if done correctly. Every part gets finished individually; aluminum, ChromeMoly Steel, Stainless Steel, polymer, fiberglass, they're all different and finished accordingly. Little touches that make a difference, like Parkerizing the ChromeMoly action/pic rail first, and then JB Welding/bedding them together before you DuraCoat...

...continuing with this 6.5PRC rig and stock....we're doing a complete top bedding of the action using Marine-Tex and then we're going to use the extra epoxy to make a finger "shelf" for your trigger finger and then we'll throw some random epoxy onto the stock for 3D/camo. Marine-Tex is heavy and very strong, on hunting rigs you want to use sparingly to save weight, but this rig weight is no object; heavy is your friend for long-range work...

...continuing with this 6.5PRC Long-Range rig and its Bell/Carlson Stock. We're going to mill a flat and then we're going to add a short ARCA rail as a tripod attachment, we'll anchor it with three bolts so it's rock solid. We'll also add a short pic rail up front as a bipod attachment using two bolts directly into the aluminum bedding block so it's rock solid as well. In between the ARCA and Pic Rail is nice, clean stock so it can be used with a simple front rest or off a sandbag or whatever, versatile set-up....
