Rest in peace Barry Lopez. The naturalist and National Book Award-winner died on Christmas day from prostate cancer.

Lopez’ writings about the natural world and the consequences of climate change turned tragically personal last year when the devastating wildfires that burned through his property in Oregon destroyed his archive of books, awards, notes and correspondence.

Desert Notes was his first book. This copy inscribed by Lopez to actress Gloria Swanson and her husband, the writer and union activist William Dufty.

13 years before Dracula, Bram Stoker was touring America, a country about which he later wrote he was "absolutely ignorant" when he first arrived in 1883. "I took some pains to post myself up in things exclusively and characteristically American... before we left at the conclusion of our second visit I had accumulated a lot of books -- histories, works on the constitution, statistics, census, school books, books of etiquette for a number of years back" (from Stoker's Personal Reminiscences of Henry Irving). Upon his return to London Stoker wrote a lecture that was later published in a pamphlet titled "A Glimpse of America."

The Grandissimes, featuring Stoker's ownership signature, is a novel set in New Orleans after the Louisiana purchase. It “may be said to be the first ‘modern’ Southern novel,” wrote literary scholar Louis D. Rubin Jr. "For if the modern Southern novel has been characterized by its uncompromising attempt to deal honestly with the complexity of Southern racial experience, then The Grandissimes was the first important work of fiction written by a Southerner in which that intention is manifested."
