Adison .waders and Simon ran up to East Lake for some early season scouting and tested a handful of products.

Callibaetis are just getting started there and the Chironomid bite is in full force. Terrestrials are getting going and fish are keyed in on small beetles and ants if you can fish downwind of the bank.

Stay tuned for additional Stillwater content with Adison. This summer we are going to really lean into his expertise to help educate you all on technical stillwater fishing.

With Adison’s guidance, we hammered fish a variety of ways all day. We employed several UK Stillwater tactics including fishing “Loch Style” with a Drogue. We fished Midge Tip from Loch Style and had a blast.

Grannom Caddis are one of the largest spring Caddis hatches out there. Here in the Willamette valley, the egg laying and spent adult events are sometimes more important to anglers than the emergence.

Here Simon ties a fantastic ovipositing Grannom pattern that works great in egg laying events or as a spring searching pattern. This pattern paints with broad enough strokes that it can be a searching Caddis or trailer all summer long.

Egg Spot- Ultra Dry Yarn: Western Green Drake

Abdomen- Ultra Dry Yarn: March Brown & Eco Warrior Dub: Pepperbox

These small cream to yellow colored mayflies are a MAJOR food source for trout in the summer months.

Typically there is a morning emergence and an evening one, and large spinner fall events in the evenings.

These little bugs are a staple in a summer trout’s diet, and your box should have a variety of patterns representing them.

Here Simon shows the importance of fishing a cripple behind another dry fly. Often fish will carefully select the more vulnerable offering. With old, educated fish, this is even more prevalent.

This is a fantastic pattern to tag behind more buoyant Caddis dry flies from spring through fall.
