Just in time for fall planting, our Louisiana, Siberian and Japanese irises are on sale from now until they're gone. One gallon containers for $4.50 each! Have a moist, sunny location or water feature's edge that needs a little something? Japanese and Louisiana irises are the way to go. On sale are 'Eileen's Dream' and 'Lion King', and 'Louisiana Black Gamecock'.

Siberian iris need it a bit drier, sun-part shade. Their foliage, after the spectacular blooms in June and July is lush and a great contrast to other perennial forms. On sale are 'Strawberry Fair', 'Pink Haze', 'Caesar's Brother', 'Sakagami' and 'Swans in Flight'.

From Sarah: Our 50% off sale, (peonies and shrubs 25% off) is still going strong. To the left is a view of many of our fall blooming varieties. I've become fond of the grasses with their fall florets creating motion and flowing in the fall perennial garden. To me they are like rests in a musical piece, subtle, but necessary to create a whole experience.

With Labor Day behind us and the first day of fall less than 2 weeks away, we begin the next glorious season of flowers, the fall bloomers. As the leaves start to change colors, the temperature drops, and the daylight shortens, pollinators, birds and plants sense the change. Remarkably, there are flowers that are yet to bloom! We do have many late season perennials for you to help feed pollinators going into hibernation, or migrating birds. Coreopsis tripteris will be blooming through October for butterflies. Chelone flowers require bees to vibrate off their pollen with loud buzzing. Grass florets and echinacea seed heads feed birds. Asters, non-invasive goldenrod, boltonia, vernonia, hardy ageratum and rudbeckia all provide late season food through October into November to a wide variety of pollinators.

But isn't it getting to be too late to plant perennials? Not at all! In fact this is the best time to plant them. Like all organisms, perennials have a balanced amount of energy to put into growing vegetation in the spring, budding flowers, making seed and preparing for winter dormancy. While folks tend to plant perennials when they are flowering, it takes a while for the roots to set in because perennial energy is taken by flowering. Right now, perennials are putting all their energy into root growth to store food for winter dormancy and spring bud break. With drought and temperature swings, perennials are showing a little wear and tear these days, but no worries as their roots are growing quickly. And, roots are truly the most important part of your perennials!

Here at Full Circle Gardens, we have always been mindful of our surroundings and the impact that our nursery makes on it. We are now moving in an exciting new direction. Over the years, our goal was to introduce gardeners to hundreds of perennial varieties hardy to northern Vermont. We have always grown native and pollinator supportive perennials among our hundreds of varieties of Vermont hardy perennials. Gardeners have increasingly asked for pollinator supportive perennials. Thanks to your suggestions and encouragement, Full Circle Gardens is becoming a fully native and pollinator perennial nursery.

What does that mean? Rest assured, we will still have our peony collection. We'll be keeping some hosta varieties and, of course, landscaper favorites. Many of those are great pollinator and bird friendly plants! We will keep some daylily varieties because they are excellent for rain gardens. Perennials with a purpose!

To celebrate our new direction, we are having a big yard sale for you! We have a couple hundred perennial varieties that are now 50 % OFF! We have put a plant list for you on our website (link in comments) which you can print out and bring with you. Throughout the nursery, these varieties will have a lime green dot on them as well as "Yard Sale" signs in the perennials' respective blocks. Also the perennials on our lawn are on sale as well.

All Daylilies 25% off through Saturday!

From Sarah:

โ€œDaylilies are the floral heralds of midsummer. They serve so many great garden purposes that we must put them on sale this week for 25% off! Not only do they have dramatically elegant blooms they are the work horses of the garden. Because of their large roots, daylilies can take up excess water in a rain garden, stabilize a bank to prevent erosion, and bust apart heavy clay soils once their roots grow deeper into the soil all the while looking beautiful! Do you have an area that is near a black walnut tree or gets salt all winter? The daylilies are perfect for that area! All daylilies are so easy to maintain. We pretty much just wave hello as we walk by at the nursery and give them a little water only because they are in pots. We do cut down the dead scapes in the fall, but you don't have to as the winter will beat all the vegetation down.

One of my favorites is 'Hyperion'. The scapes (floral stems) are tall and the flowers are very fragrant. 'Just Plum Happy' has thick pie crust edges and though each flower blooms only one day, it keeps producing more buds all summer. I'm also a big fan of the "Return series". These daylilies may be a little shorter than their peers, but the buds and blooms keep coming all season long. Some of my faves are 'Ruby Stella', 'Red Hot Returns, and 'Happy Returns' (yellow). Also, many daylilies such as 'Apricot Sparkles' will have an initial bloom season, then rebloom later towards the fall.

So, if I haven't convinced you yet, come to Full Circle Gardens this week and see for yourself!โ€

Itโ€™s going to be a beautiful day and weโ€™re celebrating by bringing back Perennial of the Week! Grab some of our shade favorites (Astilbe & Hostas) at 25% off today through next Saturday!

Got some empty spots in your part shade to shade garden? This is the time to plant!
Astilbes love part to full shade, lighting up the low light with their colored plumes. While many of the older varieties prefer average to moist soils, the Visions group, like 'Visions in Pink' can tolerate dry shade. Hostas are the glory of the shade garden. They range in size from 'Blue Mouse Ears' at 6 inches high, to 'Empress Wu' at 48 inches high by 60 inches wide! Blue hostas, like 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd' prefer deep shade, while the yellow varieties, like 'Maui Buttercups' prefer sunnier locations. Hummingbirds and leaf cutter bees pollinate hostas' flowers.

If you're heading out to get some flowers for your yard maybe think about going local. Here's our profile (from 2011!) on Full Circle Gardens
Sarah, are you selling any annuals? I have some pots to fill!
Hi, will you be selling Hydrangeas, hardy to zone 3 for Mother's Day? I'm looking for Annabel's or Pinky Winkies.
What is the perennial you have in your rock garden that looks like an ornamental grass but also has small white flower on grassy spikes? It is beautiful. Do you have any in stock?
The 30 daylilies we bought were divided to make 90! We covered a lot of ground. Shown here is half of the garden.
I purchased this beauty from you last year...never have I had a peony as productive as this one from you!
