ERIE IS A PRETTY SPECIAL PLACE. 🩵

Maybe it’s because we get to watch the sun disappear over Lake Erie.

And if you’ve ever watched an Erie sunset, you know there aren’t many places you’d rather be.

Our little corner of Pennsylvania is home to Presque Isle, miles of sandy beaches, and a lake that was recently voted America’s Best Lake. 🌊

But I think what makes Erie really special isn’t just what nature gave us.

It’s what Erie people have created.

GE locomotives.
Marx Toys.
Griswold.
Koehler.

People like Matta D., Jim Campbell, Jake Palluh and James Sabol, who have brought their own creativity and vision to our community.

We’ve made toys.
We’ve made pottery.
We’ve made art.
We’ve built locomotives that traveled across the world.
We’ve made beautiful things.

And we’ve made a whole lot of memories along the way.

That’s what we’ve been thinking about as we’ve celebrated 8-1-4 Day and CelebrateErie this weekend.

Because Erie isn’t just a place on a map.

It’s the lake.
It’s the sunset.
It’s Presque Isle.
It’s the artists.
It’s the makers.
It’s the dreamers.
It’s the inventors.
It’s the people who built things here—and the people who are still creating here today.

We’re pretty proud to be 814.

Happy 814 Day, Erie. 🩵

And to everyone coming home this weekend or visiting us for CelebrateErie:

Welcome to the 814. We hope you find a little piece of Erie to take home with you.

WAIT… THAT WAS MADE IN ERIE? šŸ‘€

If you’ve ever picked up a piece of Griswold cast iron, there’s a pretty good chance you didn’t immediately think:

ā€œOh hey, Erie, Pennsylvania!ā€

But you should. 🩵

For generations, Griswold Manufacturing was right here in Erie, making cast iron cookware that eventually found its way into kitchens all over the country.

And now? Those pieces have become some of the most sought-after vintage cookware around.

But there’s something we love about seeing Griswold here at 814 Vintage Marketplace that goes beyond collecting.

It’s Erie history.

It’s the kind of thing that makes someone visiting for CelebrateErie stop and say, ā€œWait, Griswold was made HERE?ā€

And makes someone who grew up here say, ā€œMy grandma had one of those!ā€

That’s some of our favorite vintage—the stuff that connects a piece of the world to a piece of home.

So while you’re celebrating Erie this weekend, keep an eye out for the little pieces of Erie history that are still around.

And if you’re from Erie… what’s the most Erie thing you remember having in your home? šŸ‘‡

ERIE HAS ALWAYS HAD A LESSON OR TWO TO TEACH US. šŸ“ššŸ©µ

Some of Erie’s history is found in big landmarks.

Some of it is found in old businesses.

And some of it is tucked away in the things people saved from their school days.

Around 814 Vintage, we’ve come across everything from school memorabilia and yearbooks to a music certificate from the Sisters of Mercy—little pieces of someone’s education and accomplishments that somehow survived all these years.

And then there are the schools themselves.

My dad went to Canty Prep.

I went to Villa Maria Academy.

And today, neither one is open anymore.

That’s one of the things about growing up in Erie: so many of us have memories tied to places that aren’t there anymore. The buildings may change, the names may disappear, but the memories—and the people who made them—stick around.

And then there’s a whole different kind of Erie history sitting in our collection: a map of the Battle of Lake Erie. 🌊

A reminder that the story of this place goes back a whole lot further than any of us.

From classrooms and music lessons to the shores of Lake Erie, these little pieces of history tell stories about the people who lived, learned, worked and grew up here.

So let’s hear it, Erie!

What school did you go to?
What Erie school do you remember that isn’t around anymore?
And what teacher, class, tradition or school memory has stuck with you?

Let’s see how many Erie schools we can bring back to life in the comments. 🩵

WHAT PLACES JUST SCREAM ā€œERIEā€? 🩵

As an Erie-ite, there are some places that are just synonymous with being from here.

The Welch’s factory.
The Yacht Club.
The Boston Store.
Waldameer.

And who could forget meeting under the clock at the Boston Store?

You could mention any one of those places to someone from Erie and there’s a pretty good chance it brings back a memory.

Maybe it’s where you spent your summers.
Where your parents took you shopping.
Where you got your first job.
Where you went on dates.
Where your family went every year.
Or simply where everyone knew to meet.

Some places become more than just places. They become part of who we are.

And with CelebrateErie happening this weekend, we’re celebrating a little bit of Erie nostalgia of our own.

What place immediately makes you think, ā€œYep. That’s Erieā€?

It can still be around.
It can be long gone.
It can be famous.
It can be something only an Erie-ite would know.

Tell us yours. šŸ‘‡

A LITTLE ERIE HISTORY, ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME. šŸ„›šŸŗ

Sometimes you don’t realize you’re holding a piece of history until you turn the bottle around and see a name you recognize.

Koehler.

A local dairy.

A logo you remember from your grandparents’ kitchen.

A bottle that somehow survived decades and ended up right here in Erie.

Koehler bottles and old dairy bottles might not seem like the most glamorous pieces of vintage history, but that’s exactly why we love them.

They were everyday Erie.

They were bottles that sat on kitchen tables, milk deliveries that showed up at the door, beer that was enjoyed after a long day, and local businesses that were simply part of life.

And now, years later, those little glass bottles can stop someone in their tracks and bring back an entire memory.

For those of you who grew up here:

ā€œOh! I remember those!ā€

And for anyone visiting Erie this weekend for CelebrateErie:

Yep. These are the kinds of things that tell you a little bit about who we are. 🩵

We’re celebrating 8-1-4 Day by looking at some of the pieces of Erie history that are still out there—and sometimes, they’re hiding in plain sight.

What Erie bottle do YOU remember?
A dairy bottle? Koehler? Something else entirely?

Tell us below. šŸ‘‡

Happy 8-1-4 Day! 🩵

Marx. Griswold. Koehler. Waldameer. Chuck & Ginny’s.

If those names mean something to you, you probably know exactly why we love this place.

Erie has a funny way of putting pieces of its history everywhere — including right here at 814 Vintage Marketplace.

So today we’re celebrating the 814 the easiest way we know how: by appreciating the things, places, businesses, memories and people that make this home.

Happy 814 Day, Erie.

Now tell us — what’s one thing that immediately says ā€œErieā€ to you? 🩵

One of our customers called today because she said Skully was going to town scratching his ear last night and she just wanted to make sure he was ok.

This.

My customers seriously have the biggest and most wonderful hearts and I’m so appreciative of our 814 family šŸ’

And it’s not just about checking in on the kitties. After an extremely hard two weeks I am so incredibly thankful and blessed with all of you reaching out, sending condolences, dropping off flowers, cards, candy and hugs. I can stand because you’ve all carried me. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. šŸ«¶šŸ»šŸ„°

Thank you all for being amazing.

WOW. DID WE SLEEP. šŸ’¤šŸˆā€ā¬›šŸˆ

After an extremely successful yet extremely soggy Moonlight Market, we are feeling a little like these babies this morning. šŸ˜‚

Thank you to EVERYONE who showed up, shopped, ate, played, supported Erie Animal Network, supported our indoor vendors, supported our outdoor vendors for as long as Mother Nature allowed, and generally just hung out and vibed with us!

And yes… we all got a little dancing in the rain last night. Mostly because we had absolutely no choice. šŸ˜‚šŸ’¦

Our outdoor vendors deserve a HUGE shoutout. They came ready to spend the evening with us and got completely washed out by that downpour. They weren’t able to move inside, and we are so sorry the weather cut their night short. We’ll be giving them some extra love and promotion this week because they deserve it. ā¤ļø

But now…

WE’RE AWAKE.
THE SUN IS OUT.
OF COURSE IT IS. šŸ˜‚ā˜€ļø

814 is open and ready for another amazing day of vintage, antiques, treasures and all the good stuff you missed while we were busy swimming through last night.

Come see us! We’re dry now. Mostly (ok maybe not my shoes). šŸ˜Ž
