Reapers’ Hooks and Shepherds’ Crooks are the instruments referred to here.

In Old England, forests were the private property of the king… with permission to cut wood rarely being granted.

Commoners could take DEADWOOD though, and they increased their bounty, by bringing down branches from the trees in any way they could — including by a [Reapers’] HOOK - or by a [Shepherd’s] CROOK.

Home Hint of the Day:
An old-time way of filling surface scratches in wooden furniture is to rub the scratches with a piece of walnut meat, then polish with a soft rag.

Where did “Halcyon Days” come from?
The bird’s name derives from a myth recorded by Ovid.

According to the story, Ae**us, the ruler of the winds, had a daughter named Alcyone, who was married to Ceyx, the King of Thessaly.

It’s a longer story but let’s just say that it ends tragically with Ceyx drowning at sea. Grieving Alcyone was about to throw herself into the sea to join her beloved husband.

But the gods took pity on the pair, transforming them into HALCYONS, with the power to still the stormy seas for 14 days near the time of the winter solstice while they hatched their young.

Question of the Day:
Please tell me about ashes from a wood-burning fireplace. How much can I use in the garden? Are they good for blueberry bushes and asparagus?

Wood ashes are good for the garden because they contain POTASH and LIME. Apply them to the soil in the Spring or Fall, 4 to 6 pounds per 100 square feet.

However, fresh wood ashes will form LYE when first applied, so do not use them on plants in active growth. It is best to apply ashes before planting and see that they are thoroughly mixed into the soil. They are good for most plants, especially root crops and fruit trees.

Wood ashes should never be used on acid-loving plants like blueberry bushes.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

At dawn on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in an attempt to cripple the fleet and hinder U.S. intervention in other Japanese targets in the South Pacific.

The Japanese military expected that Germany would defeat Great Britain and the Soviet Union and that Japan would control the Pacific.

The attack was opposed by Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who cautioned against a war with the United States, but he was overruled.

After the attack, he said, “We have awakened a sleeping giant and have instilled in him a terrible resolve.” He was right.

Although airfields, port facilities, and warships were severely damaged and two battleships, the Utah and the Arizona, were destroyed, the attack mobilized the United States and signaled its entry into World War II.

Today the Arizona is a memorial and a national park.

Question of the Day: Why is El Niño named for the Christ character?

The Spanish name ‘El Niño’ (literally, “the son”), was coined by the fishermen of Ecuador and Peru to denote the warming of the coastal surface waters that often occurs in that area around Christian celebration called "Christmastime."

Although this was a fairly regular seasonal event, the name later took on the larger meaning of any general warming trend and recently has come to mean the unseasonably warm weather patterns that occur two or three times a decade.

Yes of course - we celebrate life here on the homestead - but kindly request that the “happy cat memes,” “You MUST see-its,’” and “advertisements of all products” be left to someone else’s page.

However, if YOU have prepared a recipe from YOUR garden, have a plant, animal, or human addition to YOUR homestead...we certainly WANT to see those kinds of posts here!

All that matters to me now - is becoming more self-reliant, independent from "The Grid," and truly free from the tethers and worries of a system which encourages society with "Why grow it - if you can just pick it up at the store or take-out?" - method of self-imprisonment.

If you have no food and water - then you HAVE to depend on THE SYSTEM to feed you! Resultantly, you are forced to do as THEY dictate! Does THAT sound like freedom or independence to YOU?

Papi and Nana are headed BACK to what was once a vibrant more Agrarian and Bartering system of living. With the addition of solar power [hopefully this year] - and several other additions to our homestead...our objective is to become healthier, more well-nutritioned-sans-GMO-or-STEROIDs, happier and healthier folke.
