If you’ve never entered the Cherrywood challenge, here’s what you should know:

Cherrywood Fabric is a high quality hand-dyed quilting fabric brand, and each year they hold a themed quilting challenge.

This year, the theme is Jane Goodall, so quilters can get creative and submit an original quilted piece with a limited color palette inspired by Jane Goodall.

You can purchase the fabric bundle in fat quarters or half yard, with an optional Aurifil thread kit to match.

Your finished piece should be 20x20” in size, limited to the 8 challenge colors of Cherrywood fabric, and an original design.

Any technique is allowed: hand or machine quilting, thread painting, embroidery, couching, beading, manipulating, drawing, etc.!

The submission deadline is February 1, 2027.

225 quilts will be chosen for a traveling exhibit based on originality, creativity, design, visual impact, workmanship, use of fabric, and overall variety of the exhibit.

This is our first time hosting the Coloring on Fabric Class with Patricia Sanabria-Friederick, so here’s what you should know:

The class will be held on Friday, September 18 from 10am-4pm at our shop in Ellsworth, Iowa. Lunch is included in your registration!

You will be given both of these patterns. One will be done during the class, and you can take the other home to work on later.

During the class, you will learn how to:
• prepare the fabric for coloring
• properly apply the color
• blend and shade colors
• seal the coloring on the fabric

You will need to purchase and bring your own Inktense colored pencils, along with a few other supplies.

We are bringing in your teacher, Patricia, to lead this class. She is extremely talented and very excited to work with you!

Meet your instructor for the Coloring on Fabric Class in September! 👇

From Patricia Sanabria-Friederick:

I am originally from Costa Rica where I was fortunate to have sewing classes starting at a young age in elementary school.

That along with help from my mother and grandmother I learned to sew at an early age.

After moving to Wisconsin in the mid 90s, I took my first formal quilt class.

In 2013, Landauer Publishing published my book Mosaic Tile Quilts featuring my designs inspired from mosaic tile floors from historical buildings in Costa Rica.

Since then I have continued to keep designing a variety of quilts, table runners and wall hangings. Many of my latest designs are utilizing wool hand appliqué because I really enjoy sewing by hand.

In recent years, I have my designs regularly published in Primitive Quilts & Projects and my quilt design Shades of Blue was in the Paducah semi finals.

I have made presentations and workshops in Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, and South Carolina, and I travel once a year back home to Costa Rica to give classes at my family’s quilt shop.

I have also been lucky enough that my designs have been on display at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts and Fiber Arts.

I am now very excited to be an active fabric designer with Marcus Fabrics. My first collection “Friends & Flakes” started shipping in May of 2026.

I look forward to sharing my quilting journey with you and passing along techniques I have learned along the way in my workshops.
