What Memorial Day is not... Many of us need reminding. Memorial Day is not for active duty, May 16 was for that, it is not for veterans, November 11 is for that. It is for those that will never wear the uniform again, those who never took it off. It’s not just the start of summer, or the day we all get together and cook out, pool opens and all the other created reasons for this weekend. It is painful, it is remembering, it can open the same terrible wounds for many each year. For many veterans it may be a day largely spent in silence. It is a day to remember those lost in peacetime and war while in service to this country. Remember it is not “happy” to so many even though some say Happy Memorial Day. Taps and crosses on the roadsides are harsh reminders for many men and women who carry the scars of war and the faces of friends. May today be a holiday held with the deepest respect and honor being thankful for your freedom. Today remember what Memorial Day is.
