Episode 110 - Freshwater Giants // Carp on the Fly

Listen to our most recent podcast on The MEND Fly Fishing Podcast available on Apple, Spotify, Podbean, YouTube, or just go to the footer of our website. This is one of our most favorite episodes! We hosted Ryan Mock of Carp on the Fly on YouTube on Instagram. He lays out why, how, where, and when to target these freshwater giants on the podcast.

Tip of the Week // Reading a Trout Run

When approaching a run, don’t just look at depth—look for the seams. The best holding water is often where current speeds change from walking pace to jogging pace, or jogging pace to running pace.

These transition zones deliver food while allowing trout to conserve energy. Learn to identify the seams, and you’ll start finding fish in water that many anglers walk right past.

Joe Rotter and crew talk with Ryan of "Carp on the Fly" about sight-casting for carp: how to read fish behavior, when carp feed, and where to find the best shallow-water fisheries.
Ryan shares practical gear and presentation advice — rod, line and leader recommendations, paddleboard and skiff setups, the drag-and-drop method, hookup technique, and handling big carp.
The episode closes with fly suggestions (Carp Maul, Moll Hybrid, Trouser Worm), tips for scouting water, and encouragement to get out and practice sight fishing for carp.

Bass Snack Tuesday // Sir Sticks A Lot

This has been our go to bug, it comes in several colors and just gets BIT. It has a great action with short, sharp strips and stays snag free thanks to the jig head and short shank hook. Get ‘em at Red’s in all colors. The Sage R8 691-4 with the fighting butt…. Great streamer rod for crossover work like this.

Guide’s day off. Stacking up the smallies right now. More people should be fishing schmallies! The 790-4 Sage ARROW is a laser cannon for these critters. They didn’t stand a chance! 😂. I’m sure tomorrow will be a different story but today was exceptional.

Red's Rendezvous XVI - This Saturday!

Tom Larimer isn’t just a name you hear in Spey fishing—he’s one of the people who helped define it. With decades spent guiding rivers from the Great Lakes to Alaska and the Deschutes, he built his reputation by figuring out what actually works when you’re standing in the current trying to make a fish eat.

Over the years, Tom hasn’t just taught casting—he’s influenced the way we fish. From designing fly lines and contributing to rod development to teaching anglers at every level, his focus has always been the same: make it more effective, more efficient, and ultimately more fun. At Red’s Rendezvous XVI this Saturday, you get Tom the way he’s meant to be experienced—on the water. This isn’t about perfect loops for the sake of it. It’s about generating more strikes, improving your swing, and making thoughtful adjustments that lead to real results. The kind of insight that comes from years of doing it for a living, day in and day out.

If you’ve spent any time chasing steelhead, you know the difference between casting and fishing. This is about closing that gap. Expect practical takeaways, a few lightbulb moments, and a perspective that sticks with you long after you leave the river.

And if you haven’t met Tom yet, this is your chance. The résumé is impressive, the knowledge runs deep, and seeing it all come together on the water is something else entirely.

Hosts Joe Rotter and Dallas Murrey chat with Bogey about life at Red’s Fly Shop—warehouse systems, guiding tales, Golden Stone and caddis hatches, salmon smolt pushes, and technical dry-fly fishing. This Saturday at Red’s Rendezvous XVI — Seminar with Peter Knox of Sage Fly Rods.

This isn’t a typical seminar. Peter will be on the casting lawn demonstrating the unexpected—showing just how far a fly rod can be pushed, from precision and control to techniques most anglers never think to try. It’s an inside look at what today’s rods are truly capable of, delivered by the person helping design them.
Space at Red’s Rendezvous is limited, and this session will fill. Pre-register to secure your spot and stay informed on seminar timing, schedule updates, and any changes throughout the event.

Join us for a fun opportunity to see one of the most influential minds in modern fly rod design, Peter Knox, live at Red’s. As Sage’s lead rod designer, Knox has helped shape some of the most advanced rods in the sport, including the R8 Core and SALT R8 series, blending cutting-edge materials with real-world performance.

Staff of the Month: Danny Robles, Ecommerce

Danny has somehow stretched a 4-year college degree into a 5-year Red's career, and honestly we're pretty grateful. What started out as a weekend job behind the counter turned into leading our ecommerce operation, answering live chats, helping customers, and keeping the wheels turning behind the scenes.

If you’ve messaged us online, there’s a good chance Danny was the one helping you out... with solid advice, quick wit, and probably a wildly exaggerated fishing story mixed in somewhere.

Danny's been a huge part of the shop culture the last five years. Between the constant reenactments of his latest fishing adventures and keeping everyone laughing, he's left a mark around here that won't be easy to replace.

This summer he's heading west to start a new chapter in the big city with his longtime girlfriend Annie. We're excited for him, but definitely bummed to see him go.

Thanks for everything, Danny. We'll miss you buddy.
