Today, we're going to talk about food, last, not night in conversations, appear on the hill, people are looking for places to go eat, that will put them not in to bankruptcy, the problem we have on the coast, that the bulk of the restaurants, or in the major city areas, there are some places to get, what I called junk food, versus a fine meal that you can sit down, for a reasonable price, and have a good dinner, as you work your way south from Fort Bragg, there are restaurants, but they are overpriced, and badly managed, many of these places were started by people, so far back in time, even though their photos on the wall, what they did for the public, is long forgotten, for the generations that came after, these are the great-grandchildren in some respects, always thought, they had a better idea, many of these young people were raised in fine schools around the world, but they lost sight, what their grandparents and great grandparents, were doing, how sad it is when children, and their offspring, think that they know better, than the originator of a business, some of the best restaurants on the coast over the years, fallen short, what they were supposed to do, provide food at a reasonable price, serve plenty of food, so the customer would leave hungry, those days are gone, as people moved in from the city's, with their idea of dinner, forces everybody to eat a second meal, out of the deep freeze, when they get home, I can remember growing up here on the coast, that if you went to the liberal River Inn , restaurant, you would be served a large meal for reasonable money, breakfast lunch and dinner, most people would have to take some of it home with them, for they couldn't finish it, it was a completely full meal, for breakfast, you can have a anyway you wanted, patron, or sausage, or have, all the coffee you could drink, a glass of juice, of your choice, and homemade biscuits, made fresh every day, and if you wanted to replace, the meet with abalone that was available to, as well as for lunch and dinner, but not like a lot of restaurants will become everything is separate, what they call all of cart, like they do in Europe, today, many of the new people, or the great-grandchildren, of the original owners, their less people friendly, and more wrapped around the almighty dollar, as their best friend, taking the, longtime locals to the curb, in favor of the new people, that feel it spending the money for dinner, is no problem, even though the portions are small, they don't care, here's the other problems that, has raised its ugly head, in the new deal, they price the gratuity and with the cost of the boat, upwards of 20%, giving you no choice other than to pay it, if you want to eat at the Little River Inn, not giving the public choice of giving a gratuity for good service, they apparently don't care, they run most of us locals out of the building, thinking their way is the only way, somebody forgot to tell him without the locals in the winter, they will founder like, the Titanic sank by the head, into the mud, local customers, keeps local businesses alive, we on the coast and I like big cities, were scads of people, come out every night, with the price of gasoline, the cost of transportation, going up to the overhead, people are not going out any great distance, like the old days, as you work your way down the coast, there's only one really good restaurant north of the Navarro River, it's really any• good,, the Ledford house, serves an excellent meal, reasonable price, and a lot of food, most people have to, get it to go box, as you work your way S. Down Hwy. 1, the next place for dinner, would be that tiny kitchen, down at anchor Bay, yes there is, few places in the middle but hamburgers, up toward point arena, or overpriced, they have collected the tourist bug, have bitten themselves, and looking for the big bucks, while kicking the locals to the curb, in the little town of elk, we used to have Bridget Dolan's, then the local landgrab started, with the Miwok Indians, out of Jackson California, buying up the town, and raising prices so high, that a normal person couldn't, possibly stay there let alone buy food, and either one of their two, restaurants, which is the same problem, at Harbor House which is a high-end resort facility, that only cater, to the extreme wealthy, and brag about the Michelin stars for food, Michelin should stay in the tire business, and out of the food rating business, you could run the south end of town, to the elk Cove Inn, that have more price friendly rooms, they are pet friendly, and they have good food, but, you have to make reservations, and you driving down the road, just looking for a meal, this won't work, the Mendocino Coast, has become less friendly, to the lower end, family tourist, if you're going to go on vacation, with the family, I don't recommend coastal area of Mendocino County, you're better off going to a state park, or grow up toward Humboldt County, where there are little more visitor friendly, especially for families, the problem locally here, is no management, and a failure to communicate, with new business owners, that need to be taught about what running a business is about, getting sufficient repeat customers, for generations, like the Little River, inn used to be, I have run a cocktail lounge for close to 54 years, in the town of elk, started out in the restaurant business, and cut it back to two days a week, to accommodate backed, during the week nobody was drinking, currently thinking about, some way to bring more business in, maybe have somebody, come in with a portable kitchen and sell food for their people that drive up, I personally do not want to run, a kitchen but if an independent team in with one of those buses, that they serve food out of, it would accomplish bringing more customers, to the bar, with a nice view, and reasonable liquor prices, while the guys selling food, have a captive audience, portfolio started at this point, our biggest problem, for being in business, a lot of it is seasonal, except in our case we are year-round, most people want of by my liquor license, and have a bar downtown, but the same individuals, when a charge $15, for one drink out of the well, and $25 for a call drink, or whole lot cheaper than that, people tell me I should a build a hotel here, I had no worries about, running a ranch, and a timber operation, to not want to worry about a hotel, but we do need more places to stay, and the parks department, should fix the campground up, on the Greenwood Creek, state beach, to accommodate more people, it is hard to believe that in 1900, there was over 5000 people in the little town of elk, and today even though they say there's 200, I would think we have probably less than 150, but we do need cost-effective accommodations, for families, and good food at a reasonable price in the community.
