Even though this clock was used in Dodge trucks from 1975 to 1980 it is still a very rare option. The hands needed to be refinished and the hard-to-find movement needed replacing. Nothing could be done to bring the dial back to life as this lived its life in California, a typical problem with vehicles from the south. Finding a dial for the clock is nearly impossible.

Here's a brief video of the 1959 Ford clock testing after it's been thoroughly cleaned and lubricated. A very poor attempt at servicing this clock caused it not to work when the customer got it back before they sent it to us. This clock fits into the filthy, but now cleaned, case that we posted yesterday.

If you want quick turn-around time please move on now, because we cannot provide that. Here's why...

We received this clock from a automotive restoration company in Florida. According what they told me they got their 1959 Ford clock repaired from a company that promised quick turn-around time. Not only did the clock not work when they got it back, the case was mutilated and the clock was filthy inside. See before and after photos. They also didn't clean the outside of the clock, they also failed to offer refinishing of the badly faded hands; an up sell that benefits the customer and my business - both parties win.

I follow the exact same procedure with EVERY clock that comes in here for repair or service no matter what the customer has told me or what kind of clock it is. This is tedious and slow, but the advantage is that I average less than one return for failure a year. We also get customers that return on a regular basis and after their first experience know that they can depend on a quality repair.

I have been involved with automotive, repair, commercial building repair, home repair and have even repaired power tools for Black & Decker. I know that parts will fail, but there are a lot of failures that can be solved by a good through cleaning across all of these industries. This is where the SLOW process of cleaning something is actually faster that replacing a part, deeming it is repaired and hoping for the best.

Started on this clock out of a 1967 Grand Prix. I believe this is the same clock used in all of the full-sized 1967 Pontiac cars. I have found it best to determine if the mechanical portion of the clock is repairable, because if it isn't no matter how good the electric portion is the mechanical must work.

Finishing this clock for a customer in North Dakota. The customer sent this without a k**b, so we tempoarily put a k**b on it just to check that the time can be set and that this operation functions correctly. The hour & minute hands have been refinished and the customer ordered a special color overlay for the dial that took a few weeks to get here. This has been running accurately for a few days after it was cleaned and lubricated.

Repairing your Model D8 Kit Cat Klock clock...

Part 3: We get calls and plenty of emails asking about gear placement when a person tries to reassemble their clock. Almost everyone has a camera on their phone, so take pictures that you can to refer to later. I have labelled the gears, starting #6 and descending, as I removed them for illustration purposes and don't normally do this. The last gear to be removed, which is for the minute hand, is sometimes stuck, but it will come out by pulling on it while twisting it back and forth. This is an indication that your clock has a warp in it and straightening out these warps is probably impossible. I use a reamer, but you can do this with a piece of 80 grit sandpaper. Roll the sandpaper and do a little bit at a time until the minute hand gear pushes in easily at turns with very minor resistance. You can always make the hole a little bigger, but if you do too much you cannot make the hole smaller. Notice in the last photo Gear #6 has a larger stacked gear than Gear #4 and the stacked gears face the front of the clock.

Repairing your Model D8 Kit Cat Klock clock...

Part 2: Before removing the eyeballs I label them L & R for left and right at the top of the tang. This way I know which side is up and it's hidden enough from view when looking at the clock with the cover off. I do this, so that I don't have to figure out the correct orientation when installing them which saves time. After labelling them push the bottom of the eyeball up squeezing it just enough so that the bottom post clears the hole that it's in. These particular eyeballs are jewelled, but the procedure is the same if they aren't. These are in dire need of cleaning which I'll explain how to do in another post.

Repairing your Model D8 Kit Cat Klock clock...

Part 1: Remove the three large Phillips screws holding the Dial/Motor Plate to the body/case. I leave the motor attached, because it's too easy to misplace the little screws that fasten it down. The single screw on the right side is slightly shorter than the two screws on the left. It is VERY important that the shorter screw be put back in the same mounting hole. If one of the larger screws is put in there it WILL poke a hole near the "9" causing a cosmetic blemish. I hate to tell you how many Official Kit Cat Klock Fan Club clocks I have gotten in for repair that I've seen with this problem. I have yet to find a way to repair this, so it look original.

If you forget to do this you can determine which screw is the short one by lining them up as in the photo. In this particular case the short screw is a different color, but that is NOT the usual case.

The clock I'm current working on (and using for this tutorial) has been put together with a long screw where the short screw should go before we received it for repair. Notice the hole poked in the clock near the left of the "9". :(

The first clock of 2021 is a Black Model B2 Kit Cat Klock clock for a customer. This Kit Cat Klock clock looks like someone tried to repair it before we got it and didn't totally understand how to do it. After a few days of testing it'll be going back to California.
