Rescue horses. That’s what we do at Walkin n Circles Ranch. Your support at our Thrift store goes a long way in helping!

His number was 114. He came through the gate sideways and shaking and the crowd read that as a problem horse and the bidding was thin and then it was me and one other man and then just me. I paid three hundred dollars for a horse that had been through something I will never fully know. I brought him home in the dark and I put him in the round pen with water and hay and I did not ask him for anything for four days. On the fifth day I sat in the middle of the round pen and I did not approach him and he came to me at his own time and put his nose against my knee and I did not move. That was the beginning. Two years of sessions that asked only what he was ready to give. Two years of reading an animal learning that a man can be present without being a threat. Two years of slow, and that is not a complaint because slow is the only language trust actually speaks. Yesterday morning he met me at the gate the way a horse does when the gate means something good. He walked into his halter. He stood for the brush. He breathed out the long breath. I have known horses all my life. I have never watched a horse come back to himself the way Smoke has come back. Three hundred dollars. Two years. Everything. 🐴
