📚 DID YOU KNOW? Protecting Antique Book Plates, Engravings & Ephemera Matters!
Many antique book plates, engravings, lithographs, and paper treasures have survived for 100–200+ years—but how they’re stored today will determine whether they survive another century.
Here are a few simple ways collectors can help preserve these pieces of history:
✔️ Use Acid-Free Paper & Backing Boards
Regular paper and cardboard contain acids that can cause yellowing, brittleness, and staining over time. Acid-free materials help protect delicate antique paper from deterioration.
✔️ Avoid Direct Sunlight
UV rays are one of the biggest enemies of antique paper. Even indirect sunlight can cause fading and discoloration over time.
✔️ Handle with Clean, Dry Hands
The oils from our skin can transfer to paper and leave marks that may become permanent.
✔️ Store Flat Whenever Possible
Older paper can become fragile. Storing pieces flat in archival sleeves or portfolios helps prevent creases, tears, and stress on the fibers.
✔️ Choose Archival Framing Materials
If displaying an engraving or book plate, use acid-free mats, UV-protective glass, and archival backing to protect your investment.
Why does this matter?
Many antique engravings and book plates were printed on high-quality cotton rag paper, which is often far more durable than modern paper. With proper care, these beautiful pieces can be enjoyed for generations to come.
At Rescued and Reimagined Relics, LLC, preservation is just as important as presentation. When I frame, package, or store antique paper items, I use acid-free materials whenever possible to help protect these historical treasures for future generations. I believe we are not just collectors—we are temporary caretakers of history.
Whether it’s a 19th-century engraving, an antique book plate, or a rare piece of ephemera, I strive to ensure each piece receives the care and respect it deserves.
Do you collect antique paper, maps, engravings, book plates, or ephemera? I’d love to hear what treasures you’ve rescued!
