Here's what Margaret read in May:
A Prayer for the Crown Shy (Monk & Robot #2) by Becky Chambers
O Sinners! by Nicole Cuffy
Python's Kiss: Stories by Louise Erdrich
Body Language by Meg Howrey (September 2026)
Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell
Dream Facades: The Cruel Architecture of Reality TV by Jack Balderrama Morley
And some thoughts:
Fewer books this month, but I was able to add a few favorites to my list of 2026 books - so overall, very good!
Louise Erdrich is maybe my favorite living author, and Python’s Kiss was immaculate. Often, short story collections - even great ones - have a few stories that are just not as good as the others. This collection is all hits, no skips! And the illustrations from Erdrich’s daughter, Aza Erdrich Abe, are so magical. Love everything about this book.
Looking for an academic treatise about reality television homes that is deeply tied to questions of the ethics of land ownership and the “American Dream?” Look no further than Dream Facades. At first, I wasn’t sure this was for me, but eventually, I settled in and absolutely LOVED my time with this book. SO smart! So insightful!
O Sinners! is one of the better cult books I’ve read in quite some time. I love Nicole Cuffy’s writing and her character development is really fascinating. Very nuanced story about finding meaning and purpose in community.
I finally read A Prayer for the Crown Shy and now I just want to start Monk & Robot over again and keep reading on repeat. What a gift Becky Chambers novella series is. If you’re craving books optimistic about humanity, these are for you.
