Four years ago, the big workshop moved from the Offbeats building to a second private location not far away. This has allowed more space for other things at Offbeats, and more space for the workshop as there are many many instruments going through it right now. Each station represents a stage of restoration.
The workshop has a disassembly bench, patches and fitting bench, ebony station, gluing station, setup station, and varnish station. This allows instruments to move through in batches, which keeps productivity going with a number of major long range projects. We have usually 10 to 15 major long range projects going at a time, and another 15 or so short range projects, which still involves disassembly but not the more complex grafting, etc.
Some instruments move through only certain stations, and others will move through all of the stations. It is orderly chaos and somewhat like conducting an orchestra as each entrance and exit is segued carefully.
