“It matters that you read Black authors outside of Black History Month and Juneteenth and Canada’s Emancipation Day…it matters that you support Black independent authors and publishers so you hear the stories that would otherwise be overlooked.”

Thank you Sherlyn for this call to action and for including Just Us Books in your coverage of the Black Girl Bookfair!

We had a great Juneteenth weekend, first celebrating with the township of Monroe, NJ (Wade and Cheryl pictured with the mayor, Stephen Dalina) then at Teaneck, NJ’s Juneteenth Jubilee.

It was great to be in community with so many people who are committed to freedom, learning and sharing Black history, and supporting each other. Let’s keep that spirit going!

Juneteenth is Freedom Day.

We are starting this special day with a video we share every year to lift up the voices of those who lived this history.
Hear Ms. Laura Smalley, interviewed in 1941, share her personal account about Juneteenth, the day in 1865 (June 19) enslaved Blacks in Texas were finally told they were free.

Kwame Nkrumah's Midnight Speech for Independence by Useni Eugene Perkins
Illustrated by Laura Freeman

*Winner of the 2022 Children’s Africana Book Awards (CABA) Best Book for Young Children

On a humid March night in 1957, Kwame Nkrumah made history. While thousands of people cheered, including dignitaries from round the world, he announced his country's independence. After many years of British rule, Ghana, formerly the Gold Coast, became the first sub-Saharan African nation to break free from colonial rule.
