Matthew Weldon and his guest put together an absolute day to remember, with happy trout, steady action, and smiles from start to finish.

The recent stretch of cooler weather and cold water has completely changed the game. Fish are feeding hard, water conditions are excellent, and it’s safe to say we’ve turned the corner. This is the kind of late-summer fishing we wait all year for.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a trip, now is the time. The Colorado, Roaring Fork, Eagle, and Fryingpan are fishing incredibly well, and the outlook only continues to improve.

MEET OUR GUIDES | Brian Hilbert

Next up in our Meet Our Guides series is CRO co-owner Brian Hilbert.

Originally from Portland, Oregon, Brian moved to Colorado in 2016, but his connection to fly fishing goes back much further. He picked up a fly rod in 1994 and has now spent more than three decades immersed in the sport, including over 20 years as a professional fly fishing guide.

For Brian, fly fishing has always been about more than catching trout. He loves the details, studying entomology, understanding trout behavior, teaching anglers, and constantly looking for ways to become better on the water. That same curiosity carries over to the tying bench, where Brian spends much of his free time creating and testing new fly patterns. As a signature fly designer for Montana Fly Company, many of those ideas have gone from his vise to fly shops and anglers around the country.

As a guide, Brian loves working with anglers of every experience level. Whether it’s someone holding a fly rod for the first time or an experienced angler looking to refine their game, his goal is to make every day educational, memorable, and of course, put some great trout in the net.

When he’s not guiding or sitting behind the vise, Brian spends as much time outdoors as possible. Bird hunting and big-game hunting are two of his biggest passions, and when he can get away from the river and mountains, he loves traveling and spending time with his wife, Andrea.

And one talent that has absolutely nothing to do with fly fishing? Brian is a pretty decent card magician. 🃏 So if you happen to book a trip with him, you might get a fishing lesson, an entomology lesson, and a magic show all in the same day.

After more than 30 years with a fly rod in his hand, Brian’s passion for fly fishing, teaching, and protecting the incredible fisheries we get to call home is still at the heart of what he does and a big part of what Colorado River Outfitters is all about.

MEET OUR GUIDES | Chris Stella

Chris is one of the newest additions to the Colorado River Outfitters guide team, but it didn’t take long for him to become a guest favorite. His energy, passion, and genuine love for teaching make every day on the water one to remember for his clients.

Originally from Wisconsin, Chris grew up chasing bass, perch, walleye, and pike with a spinning rod. Fishing has been part of his life since he was five years old. After moving to Colorado in 2013, everything changed when fellow angler Chris Goodwin put a fly rod in his hands. One cast was all it took, he was hooked for life.

Now in his second year as a professional guide, Chris brings enthusiasm to every trip. His goal is simple: help every guest learn something new, have fun, and catch a trout. Whether it’s your first fish on a fly or your hundredth, Chris is all in from the first cast to the last.

When he’s not on the river, you’ll find him spending time with the people who matter most, his family.

Fun fact: Chris is a proud twin dad to Harlow and Lucy, and he says everything he does is for those two kids.

If you have the chance to spend a day on the water with Chris, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Give him a warm welcome to the CRO family in the comments! 👇

MEET OUR GUIDES | Sam Kinney

Introducing the guy who wears more hats than just about anyone at Colorado River Outfitters… CRO co-owner Sam Kinney.

Sam first came to Colorado in 2009 to attend CU Boulder, and like so many of us, he never found a reason to leave. While he grew up all over the country, Seattle is the place he proudly calls home.

Fly fishing has always been part of Sam’s story. His dad introduced him to the sport through guided trips growing up, but it wasn’t until a solo outing during his sophomore year of college that everything changed. After catching one tiny “dink” trout, the obsession was born—and the rest is history.

Today, Sam’s passion for fishing is matched only by his dedication to creating unforgettable experiences for our guests. Whether he’s helping first-time anglers land their first trout or dialing in an experienced fisherman’s day on the water, his enthusiasm is contagious.

When he’s not guiding or helping run CRO, you’ll find him spending time with his wife, daughter, and two labs, chasing birds in the fall, snowboarding in the winter, catching live music whenever he can, or searching for the nearest surf break if there’s saltwater nearby.

Fun fact: Sam has attended more than 100 Phish shows. 🎸

We’re incredibly lucky to have Sam leading the way at Colorado River Outfitters. If you’ve shared a boat, a river, or even a conversation with him, you know his passion for fishing—and for people—is the real deal.

Drop Sam a 👋 in the comments!
