MORE ON ICE OUT... Although everyone likes to see the ice go out there is a definite pattern that makes fishing and spawning best. Average ice out for us is April 10th and we are just a little behind this right now. However ice IS going out slowly and in a manner that is BEST. Shorelines are opening which allows the walleyes to spawn in that warmer open water. Then the remaining ice keeps boats off the prevents early spearing. This way more walleye can spawn without harm.
Just got the boat back from Premier Power Sports in St. Germain. New water pump, fuel filters, water separator, and two new cranking batteries. So now all I got left is clean-up. Fishing gear is on the agenda for this weekend. I will be ready for this years season to start.

NORTHWOOD'S ICE OUT: As a person who has watch ice out for over 25 years I would like to express my observations on ice out an the upcoming fishing season. I have seen ice out in a wide span. I have seen ice out as early as March 10th and as late a May 6th. With the average of April 11th. Although many of us like to see the ice go out early to me early ice out, somehow this reflects into a poor fishing seasons. When it comes to late it has an impact on the spawn which is natural. If we get the "average" ice out this can be our best season for fishing. SOOOOOO... right now even though we are expecting snow this week ice has been melting. On some lakes "black ice" can be seen. As of right now I will be predicting ice out in that "AVERAGE" week. This in turn has the start of a good fishing season. KEEP YOU POSTED! If you have questions send an email.

2025 SEASON NOT FAR OFF. As the new season approaches I am diligently working to put all my fishing gear in shape. First thing will be my preseason check on the boat at PREMIER POWER SPORTS. New batteries , fuel filters, and water impeller on top of the list.

A MOMENT NOT FORGOTTEN: With the summer Olympics coming up this year I was reminded of the special event my fishing partner (Jimmy Floback) and I had fishing the bass tournament of the WORLD POLICE & FIRE GAMES 2001 in Indianapolis. We had right around 100 boats and had to fish in a "No Wake" restriction. I was able to get 3 bass at the far end of the to put us into second place for a Silver medal. Jimmy & I in the Red, White, & Black team shirts.

WINTER IS NOT OVER: After reporting ice out on many of our lakes, the last week or so has been cold. In fact all those lakes have refroze. Sitting at 25 inches of snow for the season we now have a snowstorm coming in that may drop 5 to 10 inches. Go Figure, as I just took my tractor in to John Deere to have the blower removed and mower put on.

CALLING IT ICE OUT! Well as I have been saying weather this year has been a roller coaster. Just had a few days of temps in the upper 60's and now snow in the air for a couple of days. It is hard to put a tag on ice out this year as lakes are reacting a little different. Some small lakes have clear and some larger lakes. When I saw West Bay over in St. Germain having about 70% clear I put a call that ice out was March 15th. So now I just need the season opener for fishing to come.

WEATHER UPDATE: First I don't want the "climate control" people to jump on this, as our weather pattern has been spot on about this since September/October from the massive El Nino affect this year but here is a "teed-bit" of info on what is going on. We have had warm days and cold nights. Many night that temps were in the low teens and you can still hear ice forming. Then back to melting the next day even with the lack of snow we will not beat the earliest ice out that I know of March 10th is the earliest since I have been up here for 21 years so this will not be beaten. What I find interesting is last year we had a record of the most snow at 125 to 126 inches (A RECORD) this year the pendulum has swung the opposite to the least amount of snow between 23 to 24 inches. THAT IS 100 INCHES DIFFERENCE FROM LAST YEAR TO THIS YEAR. So what we are a praying for is a lot of rain. Are lakes are low and we need the rain to bring them back up to a normal level. Spring is only two weeks away.

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW: The Dennis Quad Ice Storm Movie: Well we had a "mini" version of this. Yesterday (Wednesday) we had temps reach the mid 60's I was working outside in a T-Shirt. At 5:00 pm temps was still at 60, at 9:00 it was 27 degrees and snowing. By midnight temps got into the single digits and I awoke to an inch of snow and 18 degrees. So the Jet Stream is indicating another round of warm temps by rapid cold again.
