If you haven't heard of Beachcombing Magazine, you'll want to start subscribing!
Each year, I buy myself a birthday gift. The summer that Beachcombing Magazine (formerly Glassing Magazine) came out, it was my gift to myself! I have been renewing ever since and I read each issue cover to cover, including the ads. It's excellent!

I just finished Volume 51 (yep, I read it on the beach), which has an amazing article on miniature beachcombing (I love teeny tiny things) and a fascinating article on mudlarking the Thames, among other wonderful reads. It's captivating, well written, and literally my favorite topic! I've met the editor a couple times at sea glass shows and she's delightful as well!
Their website also sells neat beachcombing related items and stickers!

At the end of the day, we slipped into a pozo to cool off. Pozo means “well” in Spanish, and in this case it’s nature’s own circular swimming pool—protected by rocks, tucked safely away from the big Atlantic waves. After our chilly little plunge, we wandered the shoreline barefoot (because I love being barefoot), soaking in the breeze and letting the salt air do its thing.

That’s when we spotted two different kinds of sea urchin tests—their beautiful, delicate shells.

And speaking of sea urchins…

A few years back on St. Kitts, I stepped—yes, barefoot—right on a living sea urchin who still had all his spines. I cannot overstate the pain. It was like a fiery biting sting from the universe itself. Luckily, I always travel with tweezers (pro travel tip, y’all), and after some dancing, yelping, and careful extraction, I managed to save my toe.

Ever since then, I pay a lot more attention to where I plant my bare feet. Sea urchins may be pokey little creatures, but they are incredibly important for our oceans. They’re keystone herbivores—keeping algae in check so coral reefs and kelp forests don’t get smothered. They support biodiversity, recycle nutrients, and serve as food for sea otters, sea stars, and other marine buddies. Basically, they’re tiny ecological superheroes… even if my toe once disagreed.

I’m not actively collecting urchin tests right now (I have a stash waiting for future art projects), but I can’t resist picking up the adorable pink and purple ones when they pop up. They’re just too pretty to leave behind. 💜💗

Today was a Sea Bean kind of day!

We wandered over to a beach we don’t normally visit—always chasing sea glass, always curious what new shores might gift us. The sea glass wasn’t showing off today… but the sea beans sure were!

These little Sea Hamburgers (yes, that’s their actual nickname!) come from the Mucuna vine, native to tropical places like the Caribbean and South America. When heavy rains knock them loose, they drift into rivers, slip into the sea, and then float for months—sometimes years—on their grand ocean adventure. With their tough, buoyant shells, they can travel thousands of miles via powerful currents like the Gulf Stream, eventually washing up on beaches from Florida to the British Isles… and even Texas! Beachcombers treasure them for the magic of their journey and the symbolism they’re believed to carry: good luck, endurance, and new beginnings.

And today? We found 47 of them! A personal record. (Yes, an art project is brewing!)

🎯 Why I Hunt One Thing at a Time

Some of you have noticed I’m a “one-target” beachcomber. It’s intentional. I like to train my eye—almost like tuning a camera lens—to spot the shapes, colors, and textures of one specific treasure. If something cool appears along the way, of course I grab it, but focusing helps me “lock in” to what I’m after.

Beaches all have personalities:
• Some offer tiny gemlike glass shards.
• Some toss up marbles.
• Some serve chunky grays or bottle bottoms.
• Some hide whole bottles right in plain sight.

When I focus, I see more.

🦈 The Shark Tooth Lesson

A few years ago in North Carolina, I knew we were on a good shark tooth beach—but we found nothing for ages. Then I met a woman who had a handful. When I asked how she did it, she simply said, “Look for black triangles.” She let me hold one so my brain could memorize the shape.

Minutes later? I found one.
By the end of the day? We had nearly 500 tiny shark tooth fossils. Focus really is magic.

⭐ The Sea Biscuit Story

Same thing happened when I went hunting for Sea Biscuit fossils. We searched forever… then I found one. After that, it was like they appeared everywhere—because now my eyes knew what to look for.

🌱 And Today… Sea Beans!

Once I realized sea glass was sparse, I shifted my search and dug into the high tide line flotsam. Suddenly, beans everywhere. Forty-seven of them! Meanwhile, Jake—whose eyes are apparently set to “Bottle Mode”—found two whole sea glass bottles and an almost-buried tiara in the wet sand. I walked right past all three. That’s the power of selective attention!

🌍 Get Out There and Explore!

I always want to encourage you to get out and see this beautiful world. Traveling has given us some of our favorite memories and friendships. We’ve been to Puerto Rico three times now, and leaving gets harder every visit. The food, the beaches, the stories, the people—everywhere we go someone smiles and says, “Welcome! Are you enjoying the island?” And we always do.

I’ve visited 47 states and seven Caribbean islands so far. Next up: Iceland in March (send warm socks… and sea glass tips!). If you’ve been or know any magical beaches there, I’d love recommendations.

Here’s to exploration, curiosity, and tuning your eyes to the treasures you seek. ✨🌊
