Egypt's Greatest Daily. Egypt's Greatest Department Store.
If you think our Dillard's day is fast-paced -- and it really is -- you should run alongside our day away.
Wednesday was going to be about Vandalia, sans the Evans Hotel lost in 1969 to arson (don't go there, we were three), and Highland, a town we read was near-perfect and now armed with an IDOT grant route to perfection.
That's where we want to believe we are: on a route to perfection. Our numbers are record numbers every week, every month . . . but we're driven knowing everything can be better every day.
Here's the Centralia Sentinel, still publishing five days a week with a circulation of nearly 10,000 a day. We've always been fascinated by this Southern Illinois gray lady. The masthead has forever proudly boasted the claim "Egypt's Greatest Daily" between Sphinx and the Pryamids.
Twelve hours ago we found ourselves in the circulation office and Ron said, "Take a picture of anything." So we did.
As we walked away from the Sentinel, Ron charged after us. "Would you like to see our 150-year-old press?"
But of course.
Moments later we're in the Sentinel bowels. Today's paper is printed on a newer press, a few feet away.
Today was akin to watching King Tut print a newspaper.
