Off-Season To Do List: Explore One of Colorado's Iconic Gold Mines
This Michelin-rated experience definitely lived up to the hype and we ended up having so much fun exploring the history of the original industry that Breckenridge was originally built around.
We may be biased, but knowing that Colorado’s mountains are filled with rich minerals and based on gold warms our hearts. Something about the energy here and the frequency of the mountains just seems to resonate with the fact that the mountains literally are gold themselves - literally and metaphorically.
Now for the corny part, the true gold is the people we have surrounding us, our team. It felt so fitting to just be able to spend the day, Earth Day, with some really good people, playing with rocks and enjoying all the beauty around us. Thank you for Country Boy for having us & to our people for making our team as valuable to us as gold.
If you’re planning a trip to Breckenridge, we highly recommend Country Boy Mine Tour!
Prepare to Find Gold or Other Precious Gems
Step 1: Wear Appropriate Footwear
The terrain is rocky - i.e. the Rocky Mountains - so make sure you wear close toed shoes that will keep your feet dry. These mountains are made up with a lot of different types of rock. The main type is Granite. Water trickles down the rocks within the mountain so you will see puddles, a stream of water underneath the wood walking path, and you may even get dripped on.
Step 2: Wear layers -
Inside the mountain the temperature stays at 45 degree F Year-round
Whether you are visiting in the summer or the winter, the temperature within the mountain does not really vary. In the summer make sure to bring a warm jacket. If you do forget one, the staff at the Country Boy Mine have extras ready for you if you need an extra layer.
In the winter - you should already be properly dressed to be outside but you might actually find it warmer inside the mountain than the temperature outside - even if only slightly.
Step 3: Pan for Gold just like the prospectors!
Even if the majority of the easy to find gold has been discovered within the mine back in the 1800s Gold Rush, the earth is still rich in other minerals and precious gemstones.
Our team spent an extra 45 minutes sifting through slush to find amethyst, copper, granite, silver, lead, and zinc!
Don't skip out on this task in the tour, it is surprisingly therapeutic .
Coming to Summit County but don't have time for a mine tour? At our Everything Colorado stores and our sister stores Frisco Trading Post on Frisco Main Street and Copper Mountain Mercantile located in Copper's Center Village, we sell a variety of rocks, stones, and precious gems.
We don't sell any online at the moment but that's only because we'd love to discuss rock shop in person. (plus shipping rocks can get expensive because they are heavy)
Happy Off-Season!
