Currently reading this now!!! So good! π€ππ€π
This was my introduction to Darcy Coates.Β
I grabbed this book as a buddy read, which made it fun to talk about throughout the batches of chapters and checking in after. This book follows Margot, who was born into a family who lived at Gallows Hill. The land is said to be cursed and the small town around it seems to turn their nose up at the folks who work there at the vineyard.Β
Margot is sent away as a young girl with no real memory of this house but when her parents pass away under questionable conditions, she inherits this house and uproots her life to take on home ownership and business management. She is immediately met with obstacles upon arrival, and a cast of supporting characters that all seem to know something that they're not saying. Things take a turn, and the fear in this book is in your face through the atmospheric tension and unveiling of what strange happenings are at hand. As things unfold and Margot learns more about her childhood and this land, she only seems to put herself in more danger.Β
I found this book to be great. I was never bored at any point.Β
Observations:Β
There is a ton of lip licking, teeth licking, andΒ things of that mentioned. Is this Coate's thing? I found it amusing throughout and thought that if you were to make a drinking game out of every time there was a mention of a tongue, teeth, or lips... Anyway...Β
Characters were likable. Others were more suspicious.Β
This book hit all of the marks to be a good horror novel but my problems come in the form of it being kind of elementary to me. I can't explain effectively without ruining anything. This would be a great introduction to horror for a teenager or someone not used to the genre.Β
The ending tied up all loose ends well and overall was a very well written story and I am excited to check out more of her work now.Β

QOTD: Name a book that gave you gooseflesh.
