In the summer of 1997, George and Terri opened a small vacuum and sewing supply store in Dickson Tennessee. Their primary focus was to provide old fashioned service with a smile while having unbeatable prices and post sale support. As the retail store continued to grow, George, Terri & Jeremy decided to expand their product offering online. Sewing Parts Online (SPO) was born in late 2008, operatin

g out of the back of their retail store. The company experienced remarkable growth, and started hiring people to help fulfill the orders coming in and provide the old fashioned service that they continued to strive for. Although initially SPO was focused on machine parts, we've since expanded our product lines to include thread, fabric and notions. In 2012, SPO started providing free online videos to teach the sewing community new techniques, how to use every presser foot available and just recently completed a 20 episode beginners guide to sewing. 2014 was a big year for the company, SPO was listed as the 2,084th fastest growing company in the US, and the 35th fastest growing company in the state of Tennessee. Today we continue to grow, never forgetting our mission to be 'customer obsessed' by providing the Sewing, Quilting & Craft community with old fashioned, friendly, first-class service with a smile! With over 600,000 orders shipped worldwide since we opened, we will continue to expand the product lines and brands that we carry to provide the largest selection available.

The Rail Fence Variation builds on a familiar structure and shifts it just enough to change the rhythm.

By adjusting strip placement and orientation, the block creates new movement while keeping the construction straightforward. Small changes in contrast can dramatically alter how the pattern reads once repeated across a quilt.

This carousel outlines the finished block size, unit breakdown, and a full quilt mockup so you can see how the variation behaves at scale.

A reminder that even the simplest blocks leave room to experiment.

With blocks like a Rail Fence variation, the strip width determines more than you might think.

When those strips are sewn together, their combined width becomes the length you’ll need when cutting and rearranging the unit. If the proportions aren’t accounted for, the pieces won’t form the square you need for the final layout.

In this tip, Maggie walks through why strip width matters early in the process and how it affects the shape of the block once the pieces start moving around.

The Rail Fence Variation starts with a familiar strip-based block and shifts the layout to create a different sense of movement.

In this tutorial, Bob walks through the construction step by step — focusing on strip accuracy, consistent seam allowances, and how orientation changes the overall rhythm of the design. The piecing stays straightforward, but the arrangement gives the block its character.

A practical example of how small structural changes can produce a noticeably different result.

The balance between background and print matters more than it seems.

In blocks built from strips especially, a dominant background — like a solid black — can start to overpower the design and pull attention away from the piecing itself. The ratio between the two fabrics plays a big role in how the block is read.

In this video, Maggie walks through what to watch for when choosing that balance, so the structure of the block stays clear and the fabrics work together rather than compete.
