On this Memorial Day we are hoping you take the day of national reflection to honor and mourn the U.S. military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the country. It is a poignant time to remember the brave men and women who died in the line of duty

Memorial Weekend Free Entry on Monday Devils Tower National Monument

Looking for the best seat in the house? Check out Joyner Ridge!

The Joyner Ridge Trail offers one of the most serene spots in the park. This trail is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) loop with 232 feet of elevation gain. It will wind you through some Ponderosa pines along the ridge and then lead you through prairie to finish. There are a couple of benches along the ridge line to stop for a break and take in the scenic views. This trail offers a different perspective of Devils Tower (Bear Lodge) with the prairie giving way to the tower standing tall in the distance. The Joyner Ridge Trail can also connect to the Red Beds Trail via the connector that is 0.6 miles (1 km) one way if you are wanting to add some extra distance to your hike. This is a great trail if you are looking to get away from the busy crowds at the park. It is also the perfect destination if you are wanting to stargaze. Our night sky is phenomenal on a clear night! Access this trail head by taking the gravel road off the main road on your left, as you are heading towards the Visitor Center.

Joyner Ridge is named after the second full time custodian at the park, Newell Joyner, who served his role from 1932-1947. During his time at the park he saw many events, like the first technical climb, the rescue of parachutist George Hopkins, and the CCC working to improve infrastructure at the monument. Joyner played an important role in turning Devils Tower National Monument into the place we know today. Joyner Ridge is meant to honor his lasting legacy here at the park.

America's First National Monument captured by David Yarrow Photography

Chief ⁣

Over the last few weeks we have quietly been photographing senior American Indians against the backdrop of quintessential and emblematic American vistas.⁣

Whilst we will be releasing some of the series in the run up to the Presidential Election, this is not an overtly political statement from us. We know that American Indians have long had a leaning toward the Democratic Party, but we took this assignment on because it is relevant, not to be political.⁣

There is wide recognition now that Christopher Columbus did not discover America in 1492 and the events in Minneapolis have accelerated the debate on the possibility of institutionalised racism in the teaching of American history. This is not a discussion we want to fully engage in - as we are ill equipped to add value, but I do want to celebrate some of the tribal elders I have had the fortune to encounter in the last month. Their pride, manners, grace and humility have been humbling. We have made new friends in the North.⁣

The senior Elder of the fabled Lakota tribe is John Spotted Tail, a direct linear descendant of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull who famously defeated Custer at the battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. We spent two days with him in Northern Wyoming and he was so excited to wear the headpiece that only the most senior Indian chiefs like him can wear. His attire was emphatically his decision not ours. Their heritage is integral to their souls.⁣

The ground in front of Devils Tower has film history. It is, of course, where Spielberg shot Close Encounters of a Third Kind immediately after the release of Jaws in 1975. More poignantly, it is sacred land for American Indians, and at dawn, before our early morning shoot, John and his wife - Tamara Stands and Looks Back, spent some time there praying.⁣

At around 8.30 am, the low hanging clouds lifted above the iconic geographical landmark and shafts of light lit up our canvas. We had our moment. Later that day, when I showed Chief John Spotted Tail this image, he shed a tear and I am proud to admit I did too. It was one of the most privileged days I have ever had in the field.
