In our final episode of season 1, we want to support and empower scholars who are entering the medical field! Their course load will be substantial in college and grad school, so now is the best time to set them on the path to success.

We're joined today by Ms. Jaylin-Victoria and my favorite physician, my mommy, Dr. Myrtice Macon.

Thank you all for tuning in this entire season! Your viewership and words of encouragement are so meaningful and uplifting.

As we transition back to work on the ground with our scholars, we look forward to our partnership with The Horatio Williams Foundation starting on Saturdays in November with the academic enrichment program. Please reach out for more details.

Without further ado, thank you again and enjoy.

On this episode of Math Expansion: The Series, we welcome our youngest player to EVER master integer operations, Titan age 6!

Don't tell me what Detroit scholars can't do...

Side note: Titan does *NOT* regularly call his mom by her first name. That was my mistake because I instructed him to call players "by name" so he had to ask a particular player, and he did what any 6-year-old would do... lol. I'm a seasoned educator making a rookie mistake *face palm*

I was going to correct him BUT... the energy was good and we had to tape this in one take on a tight schedule so... I just went with itšŸ˜‚

And Joy don't play that, so thank you for keeping your composure while I try to create this series. That's on T**i Ingrid y'all!

Without further ado, Math Expansion: The Series Season 1 Episode 3.

On tomorrow's episode of Math Expansion: The Series, we're joined by the incredibly intelligent and strongly competitive Titan with his mommy Joy!

At age 6 (yes... 6!) Titan is demonstrating a conceptual understanding and procedural fluency of math that ordinarily wouldn't be introduced to him until 6th grade.

For scholars with an insatiable appetite for math, let's put them on the path to success early!

We'll see y'all tomorrow at 7 pm for Season 1 Episode 3 of Math Expansion: The Series!

In tonight's episode of Math Expansion: The Series, we're happily joined by Mrs. Danielle North and her brilliant son, Eugene!

Danielle epitomizes leadership in the city of Detroit! She is a serial entrepreneur and influencer, notably of Detroit Women's Leadership Network, Kidz Kingdom - Child Care & Party Center, and Degree Forward.

Not only that, but she also selflessly gives of her time, talent, and expertise with anyone in her sphere of influence, exemplifying collaboration over competition. For that alone, I am eternally grateful.

Eugene demonstrated for us that with time and effort, scholars' confidence SOARS using Math Expansion. He approached the table shyly, then ended up mopping the floor with us šŸ˜‚

Without further ado, I hope you enjoy the Math Expansion: The Series Season 1 Episode 2.

Hey y’all!

After a year of work behind the scenes, I’m relaunching Math Expansion!

What makes this relaunch different is Math Expansion is more than a line of math games; it’s a cultural movement through a YouTube series.

https://youtu.be/o4VdO4-KQzs

This movement is important to me because I’ve dedicated my life to the math education of scholars in Detroit and I hope that my work makes an impact in my community.

According to the online publication Chalkbeat, the math achievement of scholars in ā€œDetroit has ranked at the bottom of the list every year since it began participating in the city rankings in 2009ā€ based on results of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. (Levin, Koby. October 30, 2019).

Math Expansion exists to transform the narrative and trajectory of scholars, starting in Detroit.

In my 12 years of experience as a math educator in Detroit, I find there are two key concepts which pose a barrier to scholars’ mathematics achievement: integer addition and subtraction. These two objectives are conceptually the most complex on the spectrum of number sense.

Understanding of integers, or positive and negative numbers, will give scholars access to higher order abstract thinking, success in college, the STEM fields, and entrepreneurship. Acquiring these skills is critical to the future success of Detroit and scholars world-wide.

So what’s the solution? It’s multifaceted.

-Engage scholars in math how they naturally learn: through play!

-Create hands-on, minds-on, conceptually based, interactive learning experiences.

-Include parents and the village in the process.

-Provide scholars, inclusive of all with a laser focus on justice for Black and socially disadvantaged scholars, the opportunity to see themselves as successful in math. Let’s celebrate our scholars for academic excellence in real time!

That’s the vision.

Granted, Math Expansion: The Series is in its infancy and there is room for improvement. This is currently a self-funded labor of love. That does not dissuade me in the least. Issa Rae started on YouTube and now has a hit show on HBO. Quinta Brunson started with ā€œoh he got moneyā€ skits, and just won an Emmy. I know the hardest part about getting started is getting started.

The hardest part is over. Now I’m ready to empower my community and grow in the process.

In this episode, we are joined by a trailblazer in the revitalization of BO&O entrepreneurship in Detroit, a beacon for social justice, and someone I’m honored to call ā€œfriendā€, Jevona Fudge, Esq. and her daughter Karrington. She has opened her doors and allowed Math Expansion to call Detroit Sip home. And what a warm, welcoming, and wonderful home it is. Come for a cup of fresh brewed coffee or tea at 7420 W Six Mile, Detroit, MI 48221. Stay for the conversation, collaboration, chess, and community.

"Productive struggle is the process of effortful learning that develops grit and creative problem solving. ... Productive struggle is a state of engagement that enables students to work through increasingly challenging problems and new problems they have never seen before." ST Math

Math is a struggle for many scholars, but it's through the struggle that enduring conceptual understanding is achieved.

Parents! Your children are much more likely to come through their struggle successfully if you're willing to struggle *with* then. EB is a model of supportive parenting. Every Saturday she's willing to struggle with Amari to learn integer operations using Math Expansion, placing him AHEAD of the curve, enjoying himself and building a stronger relationship with his God mother and trusted members of his community, myself included.

Join us Saturday mornings at Detroit Sip for a FREE demonstration of Math Expansion to enjoy, learn, and savor.

It's also the last week of the Detroit Teachers' Store end of the season sale! 50% OFF POSTERS, BOOKS, BORDERS, AND TEACHING TOOLS!
