Bee just finished up Spawning Season: An Experiment in Q***r Parenthood by Jared Osmundson. Joy and grief intermingle in this memoir of one q***r man's journey toward parenthood. Hearing it narrated by the author himself was an especially moving experience.

Happy, Happy, Happy Juneteenth!!

This day in 1865, the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was ordered at the end of the American Civil War, and was finally recognized as an observed US federal holiday in 2021. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the end of legal slavery in the United States.

Today, The Little Book Team will donate 20% of our Friday profits to African American Museum of IA in commemoration and celebration. The African American Museum of Iowa is a statewide museum dedicated to preserving, exhibiting, and teaching Iowa 's African American history. πŸ–€

Fan favorite scent "Garden Mint" from Sage Candle Co. is back in stock!

πŸ…πŸŒ±πŸ¬

Not gonna lie, this mix of smells sounded a little "out there" the first time we ordered, but there's a reason this sweet summer scent flies off the shelves.

Come sniff for yourself - we know you'll fall in love.

P.S. When you purchase a Safe Candle Co. goodie from us, you're actually supporting TWO indie bookstores - Sage Candle Co. is owned by the same folks who own + operate The Nook - what could be better?? πŸ•―οΈπŸ“šπŸ©·

"Our Sister's Keeper"
by Jasmine Holmes

Bookseller Review πŸ“š:

In 1927 Mississippi, the ambitious Thea Elliot and her husband, Kid, are welcomed to East Cobb, an affluent, all-Black town that promises a fruitful life untouched by the oppression of white Southerners.

All-Black, that is, except for the aptly-named Doctor Grimm who is known to own the land underneath East Cobb-dwellers' feet.

The doc and his assistant, Clotilde, keep two gardens - a literal garden behind their manor and laboratory, and a garden of young women who are kept separate from the rest of this idyllic town. Both are meticulously tended by this insidious pair.

Marah has been a wilting flower in Clotilde's garden for as long as she can remember - literally. She retains no memory of any reality other than her current role as a carrier of the memories of the men of East Cobb. She and her "sisters" serve as vessels for emotional and physical pain, ones that must remain empty of their own baggage to have perpetual room for the burdens of the men in their community.

When Thea begins to see and hear terrifying spectres of mutilated women who shriek out in demand of retribution, she is horrified to learn that she alone seems to be afflicted by these visions.

Except, she is not alone. Marah and her sisters are well acquainted with the town's "groanings", and their blood--chilling origins.

It's only when the realities of these two women collide that the curtain is drawn back on the inner workings of East Cobb - and who will survive when its secrets are revealed.

The burdens borne by Black women scream out from the pages of this book - the fictional ones by the carriers of East Cobb, and the very real weight of current and generational trauma and oppression carried by Black women here and now on this side of the page. Wow, wow, wow."

What an absolutely stunning, drizzly day at Capital City Pride 🌈🩷

Forever grateful that we get to raise our family among the kindest, most supportive q***r community.

Despite the bu****it our state government has pulled over the last decade, we have NEVER been more full of joy, more full of love, and more full of fight. Painting bricks, feeding each other, sharing resources, organizing community events, advocating, being thorns in our representatives' sides. I'm so so proud of Des Moines.

Thanks for all the hugs, the laughs, the flags and glitter and allllll the swag our little rainbow lovers could carry.

See you at the parade!

As always, the shop is open from 11am - 6pm on Sundays. Swing by to see KB, grab the next read on your PRIDE TBR, and don't forget that supporting q***r-owned businesses all year long is an essential part of community and ally ship.

Love you all!!! Happy PRIDE, Bookish Pals!

HELLO BOOKISH PALS! πŸ“šπŸ„πŸŒˆπŸ©·

Bee here.

I haven't been this excited for a re-read in a long, LONG time.

After the emotionally devastating experience of reading Sunrise on the Reaping πŸ₯²πŸ₯²πŸ₯² I have been wanted to re-read The Hunger Games trilogy and its follow-ups again, and this is the perfect excuse.

This dystopian YA series goes DEEP and hits harder now than it did when I was a teen. And boy, it hit hard a couple decades ago - this particular hardback copy has seen camping trips, bus rides, many a locker, and many a shelf. And I'm excited to dust her off once again.

This book club is going to do some WORK. Not only will we be exploring each installment and movie at surface level, but we will also be delving into the inspiration behind Collins' most famous work: media and spectacle, the "just war" theory, totalitarianism and class structures, and more.

The cultural impact of this series is enormous - and there is so much more to be discovered between the lines of this captivating franchise.

Join me, won't you?

The first meeting of our Hunger Games Book Club will be at 6PM on June 30th here at The Little Book.

May the odds be ever in our favor.

Xoxo - Bee
