Good job, ! Glad to see this message at the self-checkout today. YES, YES, YES! Too many times I see customers carry one item to the register and let the cashier put the one item in a bag. Why? You carried it through the store just fine... carry it to your car bag free. It's a very small step though I hope it helps cut down on single-use plastic bag use at Lowe's and continues the message of waste reduction. Great start to a new decade! πŸ’šπŸ™ŒπŸ‘πŸ₯³

Today's tomato crop is tomorrow's pasta sauce. Complete with homegrown tomatoes, basil, garlic and onions, this batch is headed to the deep freeze for use in spaghetti, lasagna and for the batches without basil, they will create chili, enchiladas and other tomato-based sauces. I add a few tablespoons of olive oil and a few turns off pepper from the grinder before simmering on low in a stockpot for a few hours. Growing your own tomatoes is simple. It can be done in a large bountiful garden or in a small footprint container garden (5 gallon buckets work great) on a city apartment deck. Tomatoes yield so much in relation to their size. Tomatoes are versatile as well. Eat fresh, reduce, can, freeze, dehydrate... they can be enjoyed all year-round! How We Live + Give Matters!

Red raspberry harvest coming on strong! Long sleeves, pants and gloves help immensely. This harvest comes after a few years of having just a few sticks hanging on for dear life in the garden. After a batch of chicken manure was applied several years ago they're thriving, producing an incredible abundance of berries. The three nearby honey beehives don't hurt either. The bees and other pollinators love the blossoms in late spring. These will go in the deep freeze for winter enjoyment. πŸ’šπŸπŸŒΈπŸŒΏ

Don't be fooled by these freebie giveaway reusable bags. They don't last! Why though? They're not constructed of durable cotton, linen, h**p or other natural fabrics. They're actually made from PLASTIC - non-woven polypropylene. So, similar to single-use plastic bags, their life is short. Instead, opt for natural materials or even upcycled polyester that can last for years and years. Future generations will thank you! ! And don't take these bags at events either. Doing so promotes the continued purchase of them by the entity giving them away. Instead, say "No, thank you...I don't use plastic bags. " Communicate the importance of saying no to plastic. Filter your drinking water the zero waste way with a binchotan charcoal stick. Living with less waste is important and you can move closer to that goal using these compostable (after use) charcoal sticks in your water vessel. Optionally, the charcoal sticks may arrive complete with an unbleached cotton drawstring bag to store the unused sticks. Select that option at checkout. Otherwise, the binchotan charcoal sticks will arrive wrapped together in 100% recycled tissue paper. To use, rinse charcoal stick under tap water to remove excess loose charcoal. Place in saucepan on stove-top or in microwave in microwave-safe glass bowl. Heat water to boiling and boil for 10 minutes. Drain water. Allow charcoal to cool. Place charcoal stick in water vessel (reusable water bottle, glass water pitcher, etc.). Allow four (4) hours to filter water before use. Every two weeks, boil stick(s) again to remove contaminant buildup. After three (3) months of use, dispose of in garden compost pile, under a landscaping plant in the soil, or back into your yard after crushing or breaking up into smaller pieces. Because the charcoal stick is a biodegradable material (wood), the stick will eventually breakdown and be reincorporated into the soil. DIMENSIONS: Size will vary from stick to stick and measure around 5" (some sticks will measure around 4" and some around 6").

Heaven sent, heaven scent. Growing your own flowers is quite possibly one of the most rewarding hobbies around, especially during peony and lilac season. And zero waste! The peonies were planted by my grandmother decades ago. I divided them and adore them each May/June. I planted the Japanese lilacs years ago. I wish you could smell them! It is divine πŸŒΈπŸ’πŸ΅β€πŸ’š

HAPPY EARTH DAY 2019! While it's all good to celebrate on this day, and take part in ecologically sound activities, please remember, this is our home 365 days a year! Earth is and will always be our home. Each and every person has an inherent responsibility to help keep it flourishing and productive for the coming generations. Our ancestors passed onto us what they had used and then no longer needed. Now we must conserve and restore the Earth for our descendants. Be wise, learn from others, think for yourself. Today, if you can, or any day in honor of Earth Day, plant a tree (or 100!), plant a garden, pick up trash near a waterway or scenic walkway. Carry your own bags for ALL shopping - not just grocery shopping. Carry a reusable bottle for ALL beverages - not just water. Buy naked fruit - no packaging, no bags. Shop farmer's markets when you can and come prepared with your own bags, boxes or baskets. Help cut down on the ubiquitous tsunami of single-use plastic in our world. Shop secondhand first. Consider an electric or hybrid car for your next vehicle purchase, and drive your vehicle as long as you can. Find new ways to do the everyday things better, with less waste, less impact and greater sustainability. Go out and leave this world a better place!
