Could we risk peeking out of our silos?

What if we chose to listen to responsible voices of perspectives different from our own?

What if liberals would check out, say, The National Review?

What if conservatives would consider, say, Politico or Mother Jones?

Maybe we could have intelligent discussions -- not so much trying to change the other's mind, but hearing where they are coming from and then seeking common ground.

Who knows. We might start a trend!

Light IS.
Darkness IS.

Constantly seeking light,
open to absorbing its message,
choosing to share the light --
just may be the way to manage this paradox.

What if?

We have 5 months of what well may be the most vituperative political campaign ever. The uglier the message, the more the media attention it gets.

What if we chose a different response? What if each of us chose to refrain from demeaning those we oppose, committing to becoming as informed as we can about the candidate we support -- able to articulate our reasons for choosing this candidate. When we refer to the candidate we oppose -- we choose to simply identify the positions we oppose.

Who knows, this higher road might appeal to others.

The commercial world puts Easter candy out right after Valentine's Day, pulling it from the shelves just as some of us are beginning to celebrate the Easter Season. Why do we insist on taking 50 days to celebrate Easter? Perhaps it is that -- just maybe -- THIS year we will figure out how to be who we are called to be. Happy Easter Season!

Lent. Something loaned to me -- like a library book? My children -- loaned to me for a time, now grown but still gently in my life? Yes.

Lent, the Season. Some of us have gotten bogged down in "shoulding" ourselves. And we still have three more weeks in Lent to continue to hone our skills at noticing beauty, new life, new beginnings -- trusting in God.

Blessed Lent!

The wise ones (here depicted by the amazingly gifted artist, He Qi) made their visit, offered their gifts, and taking with them what they had observed -- went home by a different way.

What "different way" might the Season of Epiphany be inviting us to consider?

Wishing you a Blessed Advent!

We can really wait only if what we are waiting for has already begun for us. So waiting is never a movement from nothing to something. It is always a movement from something to something more. (Henri Nouwen)

Noticing.

Gifts show up when we hop off the too-busy treadmill and just -- notice:

The first bright red leaf on the maple tree.
Little plants that had almost given up trying to survive the heat, now taking the risk to hang in there.

Who knows what we might discover, if we take the time to -- notice.

Summertime in the northern hemisphere: people who choose to go to church next Sunday may hear Mark's account of a time that a whole bunch of people were fed. In one translation, Jesus says: "You give them something to eat - yourselves." And then Jesus turns to that little band of people who were following him and asks: "How many loaves have you?"
Interesting.
How many loaves do WE have?

Easter - The Season

What if: after the last chocolate bunny has been eaten and only a few picked-over jelly beans remain, we expected something more?

What if we expected the energy of Easter to widen our view of our world? What might we notice? What beauty have we simply rushed on past without stopping to absorb? What amazing work is being done by barely-noticed people? And, yes, what injustices will we notice and choose to do what we can to change?

There is more that we do not know, than we do know, about the wise ones who followed the star they saw -- to find the baby they sought.

They left us no biographies -- no wise sayings. They simply went where they're pretty sure they were called to go and then gave from what they had from their treasure chests.

What's in your treasure chest?

What happened in that little town of Bethlehem - long ago - and we began to celebrate, again, on Christmas remains with us - amazingly expectant - after so many years. Expectant: that we will risk choosing justice - love - peace.
