BRRRR! 🥶 Coldest air of the season and brutal, frigid temps heading into the United States this weekend and early next week...except South Florida weather does its own thing.

The term "polar vortex" is nothing new, it's been around for a long time. We just now have the technology to detect and forecast it. The set-up over the next week is because of sudden stratospheric warming at the North Pole, which causes a disruption of the Polar Vortex and pieces of it (not the entire thing) to head south.
